I am serene, witty, and intense.

My Self-Summary

I am a down to earth, rationally intuitive person that truly loves my life. I have wonderful friends, a close and loving poly-amorous family, a good job in the computer industry, and a really great career in mental health ahead of me. I have been fortunate enough to be able to live and work internationally (Middle East and Asia), as well as on both coasts here in the U.S., before settling in Austin, TX.

My favorite quotes:

“When I hear somebody sigh, "Life is hard," I am always tempted to ask, "Compared to what?"” Sydney J. Harris

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here." Dr. Richard Dawkins, "Unweaving the Rainbow"

"In the case of any person whose judgment is really deserving of confidence, how has it become so? Because he has kept his mind open to criticism of his opinions and conduct...knowing that he has sought for objections and difficulties, instead of avoiding them, and has shut out no light which can be thrown upon the subject from any quarter...he has a right to think his judgment better than that of any person, or any multitude, who have not gone through a similar process." John Stuart Mill, "On Liberty"

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” Charles Darwin

What I’m doing with my life

I am currently half way through my Master's of Counseling Program, on the dual-track: LPC & LMFT. My area of concentration is working with sexually diverse populations: GLBTIQ, Swinger, Poly, & BDSM. I am currently looking for an internship, starting May 2010; my planned graduation is May 2011.

I’m really good at

Martial arts, compersion, psychology, singing, kink, swimming, defending my POV, cooking, making people laugh, salsa dancing, and florentine flogging.

Oh, and being prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse (you know it's coming).

The first things people usually notice about me

My wit, my smile, my eyes, my hair....probably in reverse order, now that I think about it :)

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Things that I like; hmmm......

Music: Every kind of rock, but with a slight preference for '80s alternative.

Books: Stranger in a Strange Land, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Ender's Game, and Shogun are my childhood favorites; now, anything in the sf/f/action genre that is well-written. I also read a healthy amount of non-fiction, mostly in the mental health genre; currently I am reading The Ethical Slut. I also devour anything written by Richard Dawkins (I'm a biology geek, as well as a passionate freethinker).

TV: House, True Blood, Monk, Burn Notice, Bones, Criminal Minds, CSI (LV & Miami), and Law & Order (all of them). I'm also a BtVS and Firefly fanboy. Once I'm out of grad school I'm going to catch up / bittorrent The Dollhouse and Lie To Me.

Movies: The Seven Samurai; Bram Stoker's Dracula (with Gary Oldman); The Matrix (only the 1st one, not the crappy sequels); A Fish Called Wanda; Pulp Fiction; Monty Python and the Holy Grail; To Wong Foo: Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar; The Birdcage; Braveheart; Pleasantville; The Watchmen; The Dark Knight; The Wedding Singer; Serenity; Last of the Mohicans; District 9; Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog; about 50 other movies that I can't remember at the moment :)

Food: Barbecue ribs (full size, not babyback); Asian of all kinds, but Thai in particular...oh, who am I kidding; I am health-conscious, but I'll eat anything if it's moving slow enough :)

The six things I could never do without

Friends & Family
Books, Movies, & the Internet
Coffee in bed
Some sort of physical activity
Intellectual Pursuits
The Weird Stuff

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How in the HELL I am going to adapt the therapeutic relationship models that I am being taught in school, designed with a hetero, monogamous, pair-bonded, vanilla bias, for populations that don't quite, or at all, fit this model?

On a typical Friday night I am

Trying to be an achiever, like Bad Horse.

*awkward pause*

I meant Gandhi.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I went all super geek fanboy while waiting in line to see Richard Dawkins when he came to UT on his God Delusion booktour/lecture. His van pulled up in the back of the building where the line wrapped around, and he got out. I think I actually said out loud, "OH MY GOD THAT'S RICHARD DAWKINS!" I was on my cell with my partner at the time; she's never let me live it down :)
