often saturnine, sometimes mercurial, and occasionally jovial
My self-summary Propose an edit
I play music, I read, I work, I go to class, I play online, and I
feed our seven cats. Not in that order, of course.
I'm unapologetically progressive. If you think that our security
can be bought at the cost of our liberty, you may as well stop
reading now.
I'm quiet and reserved by nature, and probably a bit hard to get to
know. I open up more easily online than in person. Even if I seem
aloof, though, I try hard to live with compassion and respect the
individuality of others (see above for exceptions). Albert
Rosenfield is my hero.
I'm happily married, but polyamorous, which means I'm open to other
relationships under the right circumstances. I'm more interested in
finding friends than lovers right now, though.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Working as a software developer, occasionally dreaming in XSLT
stylesheets and XPL pipelines. Studying Japanese, but not really
fluent enough to dream in it. Taking classes for a graduate
certificate in computer science. Playing in a small Middle Eastern
folk band. Wishing I had more time to get into my shop and build
instruments.
Other stuff I do: woodturning, a little bit of silver jewelry,
boardgames, anime/manga, and endless home renovation.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Playing a lot of different instruments - not necessarily well, and
no, not at the same time.
Puns. You have been warned.
Writing Perl that doesn't look like line noise.
Writing OKCupid profiles that *do* look like line noise.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
Apparently I don't seem to smile, even when I think I do. It
doesn't necessarily mean I'm unhappy.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books: I'm not much for fiction these days, but I do like the Harry
Potter books, the science fiction of C.J. Cherryh, and, more
recently, L.M. Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series. I read more
nonfiction... things like
The Decipherment of Linear B, John Chadwick;
The End of the Bronze Age, Robert Drews;
The Amateur Wind Instrument Maker, Trevor Robinson; and
The Complete Guide to Sharpening, Leonard Lee. Yes,
sharpening.
Movies: I am less of a moviegoer than anyone else I know. Fluffy
romantic comedies are OK, but if I want to watch people suffer,
I'll turn on the news. I do occasionally see something I enjoy,
though; some of my recent favorites are Amelie, I (heart)
Huckabees, Down Periscope, Kiki's Delivery
Service, and Real Genius.
Music: I love intricate rhythms and harmonies, instrumental color,
and structure that isn't all apparent at first hearing. This leads
me to some really eclectic choices, such as renaissance and
medieval wind music, 20th-century composers like Sibelius,
Shostakovich, and William Schuman, and jazz.
Food: Unfortunately, there's not much I don't like. My favorites
are probably Japanese, Thai, Chinese, and Indian.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
Questions. (Answers are less important.)
Music.
Language.
Solitude.
Blue sky.
The Internet.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
Language and its relationship to reality, or the lack thereof. My
own relationship to reality, or the lack thereof.
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
Friday nights aren't as predictable as they used to be. At a
bookstore, maybe?
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I was a librarian once.
