My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hello, I'm John Nickels. I grew up in the mountains of California in the small town of Oakhurst. I enjoy many simple pleasures of life, particularly music and woodworking. Many people tell me I have an old soul, and I would agree.

That said, I also enjoy playing video games, watching movies, biking, and fishing. If you want to come along with me on a biking/fishing trip just ask. I've got an extra pole =).
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I love to carve things, and I have been woodworking since I was about 8 years old. I attended the Violin Making School of America for 3 years in Salt Lake City, Utah before moving on to work as a luthier at The Burlington Violin Shop in Vermont. I have already dedicated my life to becoming a master violin maker and repairman.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I consider myself pretty handy, especially when it comes to creating something. I have also always loved to build things. Anything. Be it woodworking, metalworking, or sewing, I have a passion for making things; and having passion is a primary source of skill... And happiness.

After years of practice, I am pretty good at playing the violin, the piano, woodworking, and making people love music all over again.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
When it comes to meeting new people, I am generally pretty awkward and shy. When you get to know me you'll see how I really am. (Insane. Hilarious. Hilariously insane?)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

My bookshelf more or less consists of books on violin making, music, and surviving the imminent zombie apocalypse lol. I like John Dies at The End, World War Z: An Oral History of The Zombie War, House of Leaves, Things Not Seen, The Road, and The Book of Virtues. I like poetry but I am very picky about it. I am an appreciator of art.

My favorite movies are typically scary or dramatic movies or movies with subjective time frames and unique, artistic aspects. Ravenous, Perfume, Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan, Fight Club, and The Nightmare Before Christmas are my favorites to name a few. When I was young I would watch The Nightmare Before Christmas over and over and over. I have actually memorized every line from that movie. I haven't watched it in a while now, but I'm pretty sure it in some ways brainwashed me.

My favorite TV show is South Park, probably by far considering that I own like 5 seasons of it on DVD. I also like Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. I don't have TV anymore though, and I don't miss it.

I love all sorts of music, but my favorite band is Jethro Tull. I am pretty open minded but the genres I really enjoy are soundtracks, classical, prog rock, and metal. However, if it's played on a bowed string instrument, I will like it. From Beethoven to Apocalyptica, I love all things strings. I generally dislike rap or country.

Benjamin Franklin once said "Eat to live; don't live to eat."
I don't really have a favorite food, but I do love a good burger or pizza every once in a while.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
1: My hands
2: My eyes
3: My ears
4: My violin
5: My music
6: My.... Brain?
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Everything. It keeps me up at night.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Probably working on a violin, playing music, listening to music, watching a movie, playing on the internet, reading, or sleeping.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Even though I have a lot to be grateful for, and I have many skills and talents, I constantly feel inadequate. I am lonely.
