And yet, when I cast a glance upon these multiple identities, there are in fact certain traits and qualities that recur as leitmotifs, as watermarks that persist behind the kaleidoscopic parade of ephemeralities: a sense of wonder, a certain poetic way of looking at the world, an enduring sense of humor & ability to make others laugh, a penchant for communicating the truth of my experiences in the written and spoken word.
Maybe this multiplicity of selves has resulted from the significant time I’ve spent living in and learning about other cultures. A brief sketch of the geographic itinerary I’ve followed over the years: small town in Mississippi –> former East Germany –> West Texas -> England & Germany (2 graduate degrees in comparative literature at 3 universities over 6 years) -> Miami -> back to Germany -> Albuquerque….
Over the course of these many moves, I’m sure that some of my selves got away from me and are continuing to live out their lives in these locations. I should invite them to a self reunion one day. Could be a bit awkward, though.
