geeky, fun(ny), and olive-skinned
My self-summary Propose an edit
I'm an enduring college student (this is my fifth year). I recently
switched majors from Computer Science to American Studies, citing
creative differences. So far, I'm really enjoying my new area of
study.
I spend a lot of time playing Ultimate Frisbee for UMBC, reading Wikipedia (for hours at a time),
training capoeira (look it up), and thinking about my future
(involves traveling and/or starting my own college).
I enjoy capoeira,
Ultimate,
travel, cooking (when I have the
time), trying new restaurants (when I have the money), amateur
astronomy, being dorky,
enjoying lazy days in bed as well as days packed sunrise to sunset
with adventure, and so much more.
I'm not extremely into professional sports, but I do follow
D.C.
United and I watch soccer games when I have time and am at
my parents' house (I don't have a TV at my apartment).
Some places I want to go in my lifetime: Brazil, Italy (mostly the south, as I plan to
claim to be someone's long lost cousin to get free lodging/food),
Germany, Hawaii, the top of a
mountain, and the
Moon (wouldn't that be awesome?)
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Woo boy! If you find this out before I do, you should let me know.
Mostly I'm in college (UMBC) and my major was, until recently,
Computer Science. I've switched to a major in American Studies and
am, for now, happy with the it. Whenever I'm asked what I want to
do with my major, though, I usually say "go to the Moon" or "swim
with dolphins". I'd like to take a year or so ofter college to
teach English and computer skills in Brazil first.
More importantly, I'm enjoying devoting myself more and more to my
various interests. One of those is capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian
martial art which you can learn more about than I can tell you if
you looking it up on Wikipedia and finding videos of it on the
interwebs. In short, it looks a little like break dancing, but not
much.
Another of my interests/activities/passions is Ultimate Frisbee.
I've been playing informally since about middle school and only
joined UMBC's team last year. I'm kind of a hippie (or at least the
son of...) so I take winning a lot less seriously than some of my
teammates, but I take the game pretty seriously, if that makes any
sense to you.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Remembering things. Finding information on the internet. Trying new
things (actually, I'm still getting good at this). Making tomato
sauce (ancient family recipe). Putting together playlists for
parties (as long as you like to dance).
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
Probably my fauxhawk phase which, I'm told (and recognize) makes me
look like a douche. It probably won't last long though.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books: The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Five-Part Trilogy, the
Ender's
Game Series, Anthem and The Fountainhead (I'm not masochistic
enough to have read Atlas Shrugged yet), Lord of the Rings, some
Stephen King (mostly the Dark Tower series and his books written as
Richard Bachman), The Dry Guillotine by Rene Belbenoit.
Movies: The
Station Agent, The Big Lebowski, Star Wars (I know, I'm a
geek), Monty Python..., Accepted, Shark Attack 3:
Megalodon, O Brother Where Art
Thou?, The Dark Crystal, Lars and
the Real Girl, Office Space. I also like to be scared, but I
wouldn't say that I like any particular horror movie more than
another although, usually, the shittier the better.
Music: Black
Star, Q-Tip, Beck
(even if he is a scientologist), Cake, Girl Talk, The Dan Band, Chuck Brown,
Morcheeba, Reel
Big Fish, George Clinton, Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, John
Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Skip James, Black Eyed Peas, Sergio Mendes,
Nobuo
Uematsu, Debussy, Mozart, Bach, música do Capoeira...and
anything else I can dance to.
Food: I'm Italian and the way that I show it (other than tanning
instead of burning) is the food I like. Sausage and Peppers, Pasta
(with my sauce, never from a jar), Prosciutto and Melon, anything
with garlic and/or olive oil. I also really like Burmese cuisine (a
la Mandalay, my favorite restaurant) and Brazilian cuisine (i.e.
Feijoada, pão de queijo, etc.)
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit

Day-trips to the beach 6) my towel
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
...things that don't help me complete school work. Long story
short, I'm a dork/nerd who thinks deep thoughts about things that,
apparently, very few people find as interesting as I do. More
specifically? Read on...
I think a lot about freedom. I'm starting to believe that a lot
more things in life should be free (both free as in speech and free
as in beer). For instance, education is a human right that we, as a
society, have the ability to provide to everyone, right? So why
should it cost anything? The most engaged in school I've ever been
was when I sat in on a class (without permission...it was a big
lecture hall) because it was free and I was free to learn or leave
as I chose.
I spend a lot of time on Wikipedia jumping from article to article.
Some people call it an insatiable thirst for knowledge, others call
it Adult ADHD, still others a baffling waste of time. I'm not sure
what it is, but I do it a lot. So I'll find I've thought about a
lot of very different things over the course of a day. String
Theory? Music Theory? Angel Falls? Objectivism? Thongs? Artificial
Languages? Dwarvish? The Andromeda Galaxy? Io? Europa? Deep Impact?
Why not?
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
...preparing to go to an Ultimate tournament or capoeira event
(both usually happen somewhere in the VA/MD/PA area). If I'm not
doing any of those, then I'm enjoying a movie at home or a night of
hilarity and (occasional) drinking with my friends.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
Boxer briefs are the best form of male underwear.
You should message me if Propose an edit
...you read the above information and can admit (guiltily or not)
that you also enjoy these things. Possibly more importantly, I'm
looking for someone who, like me, doesn't necessarily agree with
the conventional way things are done "in our society" (I'm not this
emo, I promise). At least be open to talking about different
perspectives.
I'm not particularly looking for a Big Serious Long Term
Relationship, but more because I take that less seriously than most
people (the definition part, not the commitment).
