Favorite books include critical theory stuff (Eagleton, Jameson,
Zizek, Tim Morton), gritty realism like Denis Johnson, the
Faulknerian southern fiction tradition (Daniel Woodrell), and
beautiful no-frills prose like Robert Olen Butler's. Last novel I
didn't finish was "A Visit from the Goon Squad" and Butler's "A
Good Scent from a Strange Mountain," actually a collection of short
stories. I tend to let one book lead me to another, right now
reading through Marilynn Robinson's Gilead, and a good book of
short fiction -- The Salmiya Collection -- by an American who
teaches in Kuwait.
I always have a big appetite regardless of the cuisine, and I can
cook, but I'm a musician and tend to be pickier when it comes to
tunes: The Gits, Jello, Dylan, Circle Jerks, Nashville Pussy, 9 Lb.
Hammer, Johnny Thunders, G&R, Black Crowes, Mother McRee's
Uptown Jug Champions, Billy Joe Shaver, Pixies, DK, DRI, Minor
Threat, Leo Kottke, fucking anything Iggy does, JFA, Mark Lanegan,
Nick Cave's projects, Michael Jackson ffs, Ween, Ween, Ween,
and...Ween. And if you want to argue that the cool prince of reason
JS doesn't belong in the triumvirate of German Romanticism, let's
I like indie films -- most Hollywood is tripe. Starlet, Frank &
the Robot, Fish Tank, The Station Agent are a few faves.
