My self-summary
A bringer of purpose, or perhaps even more correctly, an indicator of purpose: a Hermes Psychopompos of modern civilization where Hades is not the destination but rather a reminder of the wide bridges between past and present. These bridges are the only thing that is true: only truth can span the wide water of disbelief and doubt and destructive behavior that modern civilization brings to an older mind. In this, [DoctorAvenue] is entirely unique, for in his world, truth wears a colored cloak, and its colors are those of kindness. -E.L., Archeologist

^------This is the coolest thing anybody has ever said about me, and the person who wrote it has a PhD, so I'm keeping it here forever.

I moved from California (east bay) to Portland at the very end of 2007. I don't think I'm ever going back. I love my adopted city more than any place I've ever been. I feel like the city and I know each other fairly well, so now I'm trying to focus on overcoming my shyness and making new connections of all types.
What I’m doing with my life
Watching a lot of movies. Like, a LOT of movies. (My record is five in one day at three different theaters.) Writing every single day. Improving. Exploring. Trying new things. Seeking inspiration. Padding my profile in an obsessive-compulsive effort to see if anything special happens when I get it up to 100%. (Pro-tip: Nope!) Working on my 35 During 35 list.
I’m really good at
Inventing ice creams. Embracing esoteric genres of music. Random arts and crafts. Understanding people. Listening. Capturing moments. Comforting. Bein' silly. Hugging. Amusing myself. Massage therapy. Making strangers smile. Experiencing new things. Recommending things. Finding beauty. Absorbing books and movies at an alarming rate. Inventing words for things that really ought to have a name. Putting those IKEA comforters inside their slip cases, although I look hilarious while doing so.
The first things people usually notice about me
The button on my jacket was the only thing people ever noticed about me, but somebody stole it. It said "EAT CHEESE OR DIE". I must have received at least a hundred comments on it from random strangers. Maybe more. Now, I'm no longer sure what people notice about me. Probably my beard. It's comparatively odd. Actually, lately it seems to be my shirts.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
(a1) Books (authors!) - Neil Gaiman, Tom Robbins, Diana Wynne Jones, J.K. Rowling, Tove Jansson, Robert Asprin, J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, William Sleator, Patrick Rothfuss, Simon R. Green, Cherie Priest, Scott Westerfeld, Maureen Johnson, John Green, Suzanne Collins, David Mitchell, Ernest Cline, Robert J. Sawyer

(a2) Books (specific books!) - "Illusions", by Richard Bach. "The Prophet", by Kahlil Gibran. "Stranger In a Strange Land", by Robert Heinlein. "Cloud Atlas", by David Mitchell.

(b) Movies - Movies are my major addiction. I see at least 100 different movies in theaters each year, and I always try to see at least one more than I saw the year before. I have more must-watch directors than must-watch actors. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, Gore Verbinski, Steven Spielberg, Hayao Miyazaki, Peter Jackson, and Brad Bird, to name a few. My favorite movie list was getting out of hand, so I am trying to trim it in favor of more revealing specific favorites. Favorite romantic movie of all time? Tie between Amelie, LA Story, and Love Actually. Movie of the year? 2008: Slumdog Millionaire, 2009: The Brothers Bloom, 2010: Never Let Me Go, 2011: Super 8, 2012: Beasts of the Southern Wild. Best noir flick? Leave Her to Heaven. Best Harry Potter film? Prisoner of Azkaban. Saddest movie ever made? Grave of the Fireflies. Best kung fu cheese? Iron Monkey. Best guilty pleasure movie? Josie and the Pussycats.

(c) Shows - I kept meaning to add a TV section to this. I somehow didn't notice until today that OKCupid actually added the word "shows" to this section. Anyway, my favorite show of all time is Pushing Daisies. Currently, like most of the internet, I am obsessed with Hannibal, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who. Other shows I love: Babylon 5, Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Person of Interest, Leverage, Eureka, Bones, Monk, Breaking Bad, and Fringe.

(d) Music - I listen to just about everything. And everything else. I like my share of pop, but the surest way to win my affection is to expose me to music that is utterly unlike anything I have heard before. If it does not glorify hatred, ignorance, or violence, I will give just about anything a try. While I will listen to anything, the music of my heart is Celtic, and I have a singular obsession with music that fuses Celtic with another genre. I own more folk metal CDs than anyone I know. Not all of my taste is scary, though. Favorite artists include They Might Be Giants, Oingo Boingo, Tempest, Avalon Rising, Skyclad, Subway to Sally, Schandmaul, The Incredible Moses Leroy, Tally Hall, Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Moxy Früvous, Copper Wimmin, and Yoko Kanno. My most recent discoveries are Janelle Monae, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Zee Avi, Rebecca Mayes, Chameleon Circuit, Marian Call, Miracle of Sound, the Doubleclicks, and the Crow Quill Night Owls. Yes, I buy music from the internet, in both meanings of that phrase. My musical knowledge has really weird gaps, because I don't listen to the radio at all. Most of the music I buy, I discover by accident, and I rarely know if it's popular or not.

(e) Food - I'm getting kind of a reputation as a foodie. Is it deserved? I don't know. I tried 34 new restaurants last year. I love all kinds of food. You could take me to Buffet Palace or Metrovino on a date, and I'd be equally happy. I love finding exciting food, and introducing it to people. I'm rediscovering weird cheese. I know where to find all the best chocolate. Here are some of my favorite Portland things to eat:
-The No Name at Voodoo Doughnut
-Artichoke tamales at Salvador Molly's
-Drinking chocolate at Verdun
-Mabo ramen at Toshi Sushi
-Ghost chile truffle at Cacao
-The Moondog at Grilled Cheese Grill
-The Royale at Pix Patisserie
-Honey lavender gelato at Staccato Gelato
-Tempura scallops at Yakuza
-Radicchio at Tasty N Sons
-Boar ragoo tajarin at Coppia
-Venison burger at Victory Bar
The six things I could never do without
Human contact. Going to the movies. Finding new music. Love, given and received. The smell of the street after it rains. Channels for my creative energy.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How I can improve myself. Where to find the paths to my dreams. What cats can see that I can't. New ways to appreciate rain. Why people say ATM Machine and PIN Number. The differences between one place and another. The origin of various words and phrases. What the hell is wrong with the people who comment on YouTube videos. Why seemingly arbitrary things are the way they are. What defines art, and how to integrate it into more aspects of my life. What I'd like to see on a t-shirt. My best friend, and how much it sucks that I live ten hours away from him now. How I can improve this profile, or at least make it more likely to attract the kind of people I want to meet. Whether I really should be devoting so much time to thinking about all of these things.
On a typical Friday night I am
Most likely watching a movie, or trying a new restaurant, or possibly writing or taking a walk or fiddling with a website or maybe just reading a book. I don't really think Friday nights are better or worse for any given activity. Fight the tyranny of the weekend!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I don't know. Apparently, I can't even admit it to myself?
I’m looking for

-You want to swap embarrassing music tastes.

-You've got a regular board game group I can join.

-You have a secret to tell, from your electrical well.

-You think it's okay for dudes to like stuffed animals.

-You know what song I am talking about when I say "Did he say ham and mustard shake?!"

-You strive for honesty and openness in all things, and you want to surround yourself with others who do the same.

-Anything in my profile resonates with you.

I'm going to go ahead and add the deal breakers section here, because it's not very big. Everybody has deal breakers. I firmly believe there should be a section for this.

YOU SHOULD NOT MESSAGE ME ROMANTICALLY IF:

-you are a recreational drug user. The stories behind this are many and varied, and I will share them if you ask. Yes, marijuana counts as a drug.
-you aren't into monogamy. I know, this is an unpopular opinion lately, but I'm old enough to know what I want and need from a partner, and I don't want to me the Y in anyone's relationship algebra. Or even the X.
-you are someone who dislikes cats. No, I don't have a cat. No, you don't have to love cats. You just can't actively dislike them. Yes, I am aware this is weird.
