I am curious, logical, and not a dick.

My Self-Summary

I think it's hard to give an accurate impression of oneself in a few paragraphs. But I'll try.

I like having thought provoking conversations with people. I like debating whether Wal-Mart is evil or if Israel is justified in its Palestinian policy. But it can also be stupid stuff. I have spent way too many hours debating the following question with other people: You are about to have a fight to the death with someone about the same size and agility. You both can choose from one of four weapons, (1) a chain, (2) a knife, (3) a baseball bat, or (4) a tiger over which you have no control. Which weapon do you choose?

In general, I like to challenge myself mentally. I finished a math PhD. a couple of years ago. As an undergraduate, I majored in Math, Political Science, and Philosophy. I spend a lot of time playing strategy card games, like bridge and Magic. I made quite a bit of money playing poker online, but I'm not playing right now (it seems to be getting less legal). If I read only one section of the newspaper each day, it is the editorial page.

I've lived in the area for a few years now. I grew up on a farm in Nebraska, which is quite the contrast. I spent kindergarten through eighth grade in a two room school house.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm trying to apply my math degree to a job in computer security. Every day is a struggle to be competent, but I'm getting better.

I’m really good at

Ugh, my instinct is not to toot my own horn. But now I have no choice!

I think I'm good at thinking rationally about the world around me, and knowing when I don't have enough information to form an opinion.

I'm a very good bridge player, but that game isn't so popular with the kids these days . . .

I'm fairly athletic, and try to stay active (especially in the summer). But I'm not THAT athletic.

I am good at being honest with myself, but this is not always easy. A lot of people are not good at this.

The first things people usually notice about me

My guess is that most people think this when they first see me:

"Look, it is a tall man wearing glasses. Why is he crying?"

Really, I have no idea what people first notice. I never bother to ask them.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(A) I've read quite a few fantasy novels. I enjoyed Stephen King's Dark Tower series, although the ending was awful. I also like Malcolm Gladwell books. (B) I loved the first two Godfather movies. American Beauty was also a great movie. (C) I probably like classic rock the most, although I like a lot of other things as well. (D) Thai food is my favorite, and Mexican food isn't bad either.

The six things I could never do without

1. Weapons grade uranium. 2. My bullet proof vest. 3. Toilet paper. 4. Polaris, the North Star. 5. Unicorns. 6. Lists.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

I like to think about the future, though I don't know if I spend A LOT of time thinking about it.

Here is one thought about the future:
It seems that medicine keeps getting better and better. Someday, medicine will be so advanced that people will be nearly immortal (assuming we haven't destroyed each other in a nuclear war by then). A lot of people disagree with me, and say that science will never be that advanced. But where will science be in 500 years? What about in 5 million years? Thinking about the advances that have occurred in the last 100 years, there will have to spectacular advances that far into the future.

On a typical Friday night I am

I'm probably out with some friends from work. Lately, the routine has been to go out to eat, then play a board game.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I wore a back brace in high school. What a nerd!

You should message me if

I'm looking for someone smart, attractive, and fun. Of course, I think that is what everyone is looking for. If you are the type of person who likes long, interesting conversations late at night, then you should message me.
