My self-summary
I'm a repatriated New Yorker, grew up in Brooklyn, left NYC for 30+ years, moved back a few years ago. It was a great decision. I live now on the Upper East Side and work at a hospital in the Bronx.

I'm a surgical pathologist, and my work gives me great intellectual and spiritual satisfaction. There's a lot that turns me on: I love the theater, I'm a baseball fan, and I travel whenever I can, most recently to India, Ireland, Morocco, and Peru. I have a dream of a small mountain retreat, and who knows, maybe I'll have it someday.

Here are some other things I like: Choral singing, snuggling, Rachel Maddow, common sense, subway systems, Turkish food, leaving my iPhone at home, Carly Simon - James Taylor - Carol King, newly reupholstered furniture, intelligent conversation, trustworthiness, mutually satisfying sex, making the right diagnosis, bad puns, early Woody Allen, late Woody Allen, and most of all, good friends.

There are things I don't like, too: Overbooked calendars, late Friday afternoons at work, the way I used to look, cleaning the apartment, scary cab rides, winter, ageism, 5:30 AM workouts, entitlement, watermelon, text addicts, shaving cuts on the top of my head, overwork, reality television, needing reading glasses, cucumber, trying to think of clever things to put in this profile.

And here's what I appreciate in men: self-awareness, self-confidence, loyalty, honesty, a warm regard for other people's thoughts and feelings, intelligence, and a deep willingness to share the ups and downs of life with another man. Note that I haven't said anything about body type, sexual style, income level, or proximity to Manhattan (in the local area). Those are just details.

If any of this appeals to you, please say hello. The holidays are coming. Shall we spend them together?
What I’m doing with my life
Staring through a microscope, doing my best to get it right at work. I'm a perfectionist - you want me to be - and it's my passion to make sure I give the best healthcare I can.

Back to choral singing this fall! Check out the Dessoff Choirs on the web. It'll be great to be with the group again.

Laughing at the ups and downs of online dating - and occasionally crying a little bit too. This ain't easy, is it.
I’m really good at
My job, and a good thing for all those patients!
Recognizing that I'm overthinking things and then letting them go.
Crying at movies and shows.
Navigating the subway system.
Reading between the lines.
Hitting a low E-flat.
Being on time.
Letting people do their thing without trying to "correct" them.
The first things people usually notice about me
My eyes, for some reason. My ability to hold up my end of a conversation. How physically clumsy I can be sometimes. At some point, everyone wants to rub the top of my head (I love it).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Kavalier and Clay (Michael Chabon), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the Spenser novels (guilty pleasures), The Foundation Trilogy (Isaac Asimov), Wolf Hall, The Art of Fielding.

Movies: The Artist, Avatar, Starman, Field of Dreams, Annie Hall, Fargo - that's a fair sampling.

Shows: Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Avenue Q, West Side Story, Hairspray, Angels in America, and many others.

Music: Anything by Sondheim, Classical (especially Beethoven's 7th and Mahler's 8th), the Beatles and a lot of British Invasion music, The Great American Songbook (I listen to Jonathan Schwartz). I could listen to Nancy Lamott all day. Ask me about my Sirius XM presets.

TV: 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, the Office, Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, Family Guy, Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert.

Food: It would be easier to ask what I don't like, but I have a special fondness for sushi and a really well-prepared burger.
The six things I could never do without
A cup of coffee within 30 minutes of waking up.
My passport.
Stephen Sondheim's music.
Reading material.
A razor (got to keep the head shaved somehow)
A job like the one I've got.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How I got to be 57 years old.
How I got to be 57 years old and single.
How to be a better pathologist (and how to find time to keep up with journal articles).
How I can be a better friend.
Life in New York, the good and the bad.
On a typical Friday night I am
Usually at home in my sweatpants, eating take-out food, watching Rachel Maddow, catching up on email to friends, and generally decompressing from the week at work. But I could be talked into going out!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
.... is the thing that used to go in this space. Maybe it's better if we keep private stuff private - between us.
