My self-summary
I am an educated (MA, just shy of a PhD) professional with eclectic interests. I have extensive book and music libraries (more about which below); I work out daily, if I can; I like to travel whenever time allows (In Cali, anything from San Francisco to the high desert. Beyond the Golden State, I have stayed in an igloo in Yellowstone, canoed and camped widely, and had my most sublime experience soaking up the ancient vibes inside the Great Pyramid); I am progressive and very open-minded; I can be very serious but also have a deep silly streak (humor is essential to me); I am very independent, and I am always open to new adventures. I am kind, compassionate, sometimes generous to a fault.
What I’m doing with my life
It seems that I spend an inordinate amount of time working on my 113yr-old house and in my large yard. Generally, I try to keep moving forward, always honing mind and body.
I’m really good at
Thinking systematically, communicating, getting people to laugh, not taking myself too seriously. And listening.
The first things people usually notice about me
My ability to communicate with people from all walks of life and my sense of humor (I hope they laugh with, not at). I am pretty self deprecating -- I don't take myself too seriously, unless I have to. I am a calming influence on many people I meet.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
It is very difficult for me to list 'favorites,' so I'll highlight genres with examples (does that sound too pedantic?):

Music: Alt-country (Ryan Adams, American Aquarium, Lucero); singer-songwriter (John Hiatt, Tift Merritt, Van Morrison); blues (Booba Barnes, Junior Wells); folk (Koerner, Ray and Glover);punk/alt Rock (The Replacements, New York Dolls, The Pogues, Joe Strummer,); reggae (Bob, of course); surf (The Mermen); North African desert blues (Tinariwen); Soul (Otis); Tuvan throat singing (Huun Huur Tu); post-rock (Explosions in the Sky); southern rock (The Allman Brothers); Mali music (Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate); power pop (Big Star); classic rock (Stones, Steppenwolf); shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine); new wave (Television, Richard Hell); and I think I'll stop there. I've lately been steeped in Replacements/Stinson/Westerberg. And Jason Molina's haunting sounds are never far.

Books: Shakespeare (a genre all his own); 18th century British novel (Laurence Sterne); Mark Twain; 20th century novel (Lowry, Joyce, Beckett, Gaddis, McCarthy); poetry (Rimbaud, Villon, Plath, Hugo); history; philosophy; musical history, and more.

Food: Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese (inc. sushi), Ethiopian, Mexican, Indian, Italian, Cuban, Middle Eastern, Greek, BBQ, cheeseburgers!

Film: Everything from horror/sci-fi to comedy to art house and indie. Love Kubrick, Herzog, Scorsese, Jarmusch, etc. (Actually met Herzog a couple of times - in person he is as surreal and intense as he is in his documentaries.)
The six things I could never do without
My six cats - amazing beasts every one.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to keep growing and evolving. How to to find fleeting transcendence in literature, music, or the natural world.
On a typical Friday night I am
Lately, it's been pretty quiet. I typically unwind after the work week with a drink and music.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have actually made a good faith effort in joining this site, but it has yielded little.
You should message me if
You are smart, sensual, humorous, adventurous, unselfish, honest, non-judgmental, progressive, and love animals.
