My Self-Summary

Hello dear stalkers, let me try to sketch out a few things about myself.

I'm a good-humored, geeky guy who, in a weird reversal of the way these things normally happen, lives in Cambridge but works in Lexington.

I tend to not really care what other people think of me, but I still dislike making other people uncomfortable. Going along with that I try not to put myself in the position of having to keep things secret or lie about things, so if you ask me a question there's a pretty good chance you're going to get an answer.

I enjoy reading a lot. Most of what I read is science fiction or fantasy, but I mix in a good amount of history, economics, science, philosophy, and general stuff.

I also like roleplaying. I'm running a tabletop game and four time a year I'll dress up and head out to the woods for the weekend to hit people over the head with padded swords while shouting "Thou craven sheep-fondler!" or something like that.

I generally like hiking, skiing, sailing, and the outdoors but I don't feel like I get enough of it.

I tend to be a neophile but I also like to think things through for a bit first. I sometimes demand up to five minutes of "Oh, I don't know" before joining friends on crazy adventures.

A few people have made scurrilous accusations about me being "mellow." Thats not bad for a first impression but there's also a big part of me that wants to be challenged and to meet that challenge with everything I've got.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm currently working at Lincoln Labs doing programming and analysis for radars. I like it there, but who knows if something better will come along?

Though I was born in Maine I've found that I've set down some roots around here and I don't foresee ever leaving for elsewhere.

I’m really good at

I think I'll say that I can talk intelligently about a pretty wide range of stuff, at least well enough to fake it.

Also, I can generally act calm and collected even if I'm shaking with fear, literally seeing red with anger, or whenever.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

I'm tall, broad shouldered, and a little overweight. I'm pretty cheerful but I tend to be more reserved in larger groups.

Whenever I get a compliment on my appearance from a woman it always seems to be about me being strong or having broad shoulders or such. Whenever I get a compliment on my appearance from a man (gay or straight) it always seems to be about my hair. No, I don't know why it works that way.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

For fiction, mostly SF and F for me, I like books by Steven Brust, John C. Wright, Louis McMaster Bujold, Elizabeth Moon, Neil Gaimon, Robert Jordan, and Charles Stross among many others.

For nonfiction I think I can get away with naming individual books. Some books I've really enjoyed are Freakanomics, Guns, Germs, and Steel, Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, and The Art of Maneuver.

Some favorite movies are The Bourne Identitiy, Willow, and Spirited Away.

For TV I haven't really watched much since Babylon 5, though some friends have been trying to get me to watch Dr. Who. I'm fairly interested in Anime and some series I've enjoyed have been Rah Xephon, Slayers, Ghost in the Shell, and Crest of the Stars.

For music I tend to like a wide variety of things but music isn't generally a big part of my life. Some people and groups I like are The Beatles, Duke Ellington, Viena Teng, and Yuki Kajiura.

For food I particularly like spicy Indian and Chinese.

The six things I could never do without

Friends and family, my collection of books, my computers and access to the Internet, cuddles, cold weather, and my iPhone.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How things work. Devices, societies, whatever.

On a typical Friday night I am

I have a group of friends I usually go out to dinner with if nothing else is going on.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I've only ever slept with a one woman.

You should message me if

Its a free internet and I try to respond to any serious messages I get, so don't be afraid to message me if you feel like it.
