I am curious, creative, and wry.

My Self-Summary

My 25 things meme, written a while ago:

1. I may look at a recipe, but I rarely follow one exactly.
2. I work with children. My co-workers tell me I’m an angel, mainly because they’re glad not to teach my kids.
3. My car radio is usually set to WYPR or WTMD.
4. I took Linear Algebra in college just for fun.
5. When I was a small child, I wanted to be a librarian, because I couldn’t imagine anything better than being with books all day.
6. I have a terrific memory for details. I've realized this more and more lately.
7. I love the sight of trees transformed by flowers in the spring and brilliant colors in the fall.
8. I have a tattoo that I designed myself.
9. My favorite places in Baltimore are places where you can’t see any signs you’re in a city--I'm not a city girl at heart.
10. I watch TV in marathons. Lately NCIS, though my favorites remain West Wing and Firefly.
11. I love maps and feel more than a little disdain for people who rely completely on gps.
12. Prime numbers bother me, for reasons I can’t explain. I'm really glad to finally be 24.
13. I take more time than most people to form strong opinions, whether about people or policies or anything, but I rarely change my mind once I make it up.
14. I plan someday to walk El Camino across Spain.
15. I find wedding bands lovely and engagement rings garish.
16. I’ve read nearly every Star Wars novel written before I graduated high school.
17. I prefer driving with the windows down to driving with the AC on.
18. I have studied 5 languages other than English, though I could probably only communicate in one or two.
19. My only allergy is to poison ivy—and all its relatives.
20. I come out INTJ on the Myers-Briggs.
21. I prefer tea to coffee, wine to beer.
22. I have never been to a professional football, basketball or baseball game.
23. I had a thoroughly standard suburban, upper-middle-class childhood.
24. The people at the farmers' market near my house know me well enough to tease me for always ordering the same things.
25. I’ll choose fiction over non-fiction almost every time.

What I’m doing with my life

I finished my master's in May, and I'm in my third year teaching special ed in the city. I'll be done in a couple years, and I'd like to study the neuroscience of learning. Or maybe get a PhD in ethnography.

I’m really good at

Using language carefully. Telling stories.

The first things people usually notice about me

Eyes? Breasts? I know at work I give a very sweet and polite impression, but I hope that's not really me.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I'll read anything by Ursula LeGuin, Barbara Kingsolver, Jane Smiley, Milan Kundera, Orson Scott Card.. right now I'm reading *The Year of the Flood* by Margaret Atwood, which I absolutely love. I also just got a book on Afghanistan, because I want to be better informed.

As for music, I like things I can sing to or play on the guitar. Lately the Weepies, Old Crow Medicine Show, Regina Spektor, the Mountain Goats, a host of others...

Food...anything that's in the Joy of Cooking. Preferably cooked with a group. Most nationalities. Though weird textures bother me. I don't like tapioca pudding or squishy tomatoes.

I generally watch more TV than movies. West Wing is perhaps my reigning favorite, but I watch/ed the Wire, the Daily Show, NCIS, Buffy, X-files, Firefly, Doctor Who, the Office, 30 Rock... and other random mind-rotting garbage that helps me procrastinate from writing lesson plans.

The six things I could never do without

Sunshine
Flowering trees
Language
Stories
Friends
Mountains

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Education
Grad School
My students
Writing
My to do list
People I love

On a typical Friday night I am

Having dinner with friends, recovering from the work week.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I don't really expect this to work. The people I've gotten seriously involved with in the past have all been friends before they've been lovers.

You should message me if

You can spell homophones correctly.
