My self-summary
Even though I've done reasonably well for myself from a career point of view, I haven't had any luck on the relationships front. I'm quite shy around women I am attracted to (though fine as friends), so I'm looking for a different way of getting to know them that would help if we met for a date.

I am quite a cautious person when it comes to my social life, and particularly relationships, but am trying to be more assertive in this area. I would though still leave the next move up to the lady once I've messaged them, so I don't come across as a bit too eager and give them the space to make the right decision for them.

I like sport, watching films, drama of many sorts and science fiction. I also like a good laugh, such as watching sitcoms (mainly classics like "The Good Life", "Frasier" or "Everybody Loves Raymond", but I'll watch anything that makes me laugh (my favourite comedian is Jack Dee). I am enthusiastic about my profession - engineering, and the good that it can do for the world.

I'm slowly getting back my fitness following long-term back problems, and like to walk/hike, swim occasionally and go cycling when the weather's fine.
What I’m doing with my life
I work as a Senior Mechanical Engineer (graduating in 1996) in the construction industry, and currently work in London for a consulting engineering firm. Essentially I design heating, ventilation and A/C systems (amongst other things) for all manner of buildings. Its quite challenging work, given the strict environmental laws now covering my industry.

I also help my local community by volunteering to be a director on my local residents' association (since 2007), hopefully bringing some of my knowledge from work to help improve the housing development where I live.
I’m really good at
My job and being useful to people.
The first things people usually notice about me
Hopefully an honest and decent person.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I like sci-fi generally, and especially Star Trek (except the new films - I'm of a TNG guy [a child of the 80s]) and similar shows. My favourite films are "The Shawshank Redemption", "L.A. Confidential" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" and ER/CSI on TV. To be honest, I like a broad range of films and TV, except horror and reality TV.

As an 80s man, I like music mainly from that era, or similar modern stuff, but I like orchestral music as I find it relaxing - and particularly like film scores.

I love Chinese and Italian food, and especially spaghetti bolognese - I would have no trouble eating it every day! I would like try try new cuisines, as long as I can find something that's mild (I'm not a fan of spicy food).

I'm not an avid book reader, but amongst the trekkie books (passing the time on the train to work), I try and broaden my horizons with classical literature form time to time, which I got into by watching period dramas on TV (e.g. Pride & Prejudice).
The six things I could never do without
Spaghetti bolognese
A computer (for work and home)
My car (essential for work, great for visiting people and holidays)
Branston pickle (great with cheese!)
My ductulator (for my job)
Sci-Fi on TV (I won't make you watch it if you hate that sort of stuff)
(I was going to say "air", but that would make 7!)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Making my designs work in often difficult conditions.
Improving myself and my life, my firm and being happier.
On a typical Friday night I am
Relaxing at home in front of the TV, looking forward to the weekend, or occasionally going out to the cinema with a friend.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Sorry, but that sort of thing is for serious relationships only.
You should message me if want to get to know me better and would like for me to do the same.
