My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
*Aux francophones: mon profil est en anglais, mais si vous préférez m'écrire en français vous êtes les bienvenues - je dois m'entraîner!*

An Australian smartarse spending a year in Paris...

I am a certified geek, not-so-certified poet, cat lover (we do exist in man form, though we be rare), restless traveler and occasional dabbler in pseudo-inventive cookery.

I am an absolute sucker for learning new languages and am a firm believer in John Keating's motto: we use language not to communicate, but to woo women. Failing that, I do it for the poetry. I did say I was a geek!
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Studying for a PhD in Comparative Literature in the US. I needed French for this and after attending one seminar on surrealist poetry I realised my level wasn't even close to up to scratch, so here I am in Paris to try to immerse myself.

Rather counter-intuitively, I'm also teaching English here. That doesn't exactly help with the whole immersion plan so if you want to help me, again, les françaises sont les bienvenues!
If you can help me leave here having written at least one poem in French I will... thank you in some way...
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Analysing the shit out of a good poem... but in a good way, not the fusty academic way that just leaves it dead.
I also like to think I'm a good reader of poetry. You should come to the open mic night I haunt every week. It's huge!

Learning languages. I know that growing up bilingual put me at an unfair disadvantage, but passion is an even better motivator.

I'm not too shabby at cooking either.

And inappropriate humour.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Outside Australia: my accent.
Inside Australia: my smartarse attitude.
Everywhere: the fact that I look a lot like Tim Curry.

Alright, I'm going to try really, really hard not to be a kid in a candy store about this... so instead of giving you overgrown lists of all my favourite authors, I'll just leave you with three of my favourite quotes. Guess where they're from and you get instant brownie points:

"J'ai tendu des cordes de clocher à clocher; des guirlandes de fenêtre à fenêtre; des chaînes d'or d'étoile à étoile et je danse."

"But know your hair was bound and wound
About the stars and moon and sun..."

"Quiero comer tu piel como una intacta almendra."

Music: I have very eclectic tastes. I listen to a lot of Classical Trance and classic Rock...

Movies: Star Wars, The Wedding Crashers, Eight and a Half, Apocalypse Now, Stranger Than Fiction, Bright Star, Liberal Arts...

Shows: Archer, Community, Futurama, Game of Thrones, New Girl, Sherlock

Food: Many, many things, particularly Indian and Mexican...
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
A pen and paper... or anything with which I can write;
A collection of poetry, preferably an anthology since I can never choose just one;
Sex: unoriginal, yes, but it's true and I won't lie about it;
Stimulating conversation;
Single malt scotch;
A cat to keep me some badass company.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How I can reconcile my interest in literary criticism with my total rejection of political analysis, without therefore being (labeled as) a reactionary thinker.

How we present ourselves; the roles we play.
"We are experiments; let us also want to be such."

Why the poets have been so inexcusably silent on the subject of garlic
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
At a bar or a club with friends. I like my house, but I can't just sit in it on a weekend night... unless someone makes it worth my while!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I am a feminist.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You like what you see, and you can take a joke: I am both very approachable and very sarcastic. I WILL tease you the first time we talk; and the second, and the third... But then I'll probably stop because I'm not actually that mean. I have never not responded to a message in a friendly way. Except for that one time I got a highly offensive and accusatory message from a total stranger out of the blue. I simply ignored that one.

Also, you're not necessarily after anything serious or exclusive and you know the difference between manipulating people for selfish means and playful, sensual, mutual pleasure. I'm all about the latter, but I don't tolerate the former.
