Poem: Snake Eyes

It was so dark, I did not know,
How cold I was from midnight snow,
And though my mind, it had not thawed
I knew it was Death’s face I’d clawed
And since I cheated Death twice ‘fore
That time I prayed I’d do so once more
For my life I had cradled much
As one would for a mother’s touch
But now I worried oh so much
That death’s angel had found me.

The cold now brought me to my knees
As my eyes tore with the whipping breeze
I reached my home and undid the lock
To hear the chime of my father’s clock
As I turned again to lock the door
I was face to face with Death once more
And as I was approached by the ghastly figure
I took a second to consider
If it was life or death which was more bitter
But neither was one I wished to be.

Death was more frightening each time we crossed
And once again my hand was tossed
Again Death read my latest fear,
The cold, which at first made him sneer,
He picked again the game we’d play
To decide my fate on Hollow’s Day,
I had to defeat Death again
For freedom from Hell was what I’d win
And as the Game was to begin
I made my last forsaken plea.

We stood at a dock, with the water frozen
All the Game’s rules were carefully chosen:
I’d walk across the cracking ice
And with each step Death threw two dice
An odd sum meant the ice would break
Yet even meant I’d keep crossing the lake
And each time I’d step my heart would chase
As across the ice I’d quickly race
While the dice fell each time at a steady pace
And Death’s evil grin was all I could see.

The ice broke once, I kept on the move,
But in front of me was another groove
Then I stared at Death who did not flinch
So I sat where I stood and moved not an inch
We stared at each other while I felt the cold
But I was a man who made a move so bold
Being Death could not throw without my feet
And as I drowned in the freezing sleet
I knew the gates of Heaven were what I’d meet
And I died cheating Death again times three.

Poem: A Toast

A Toast

With you it seems I ramble on
About the works of Luc Besson
Stephen, George and Shymaylan
And you never change the subject
You are such a peaceful creature
Listening about each feature
With smile silent of friend and teacher
One with whom I connect -
Vivid eyes that grace the reel
Of the movie in my mind
I cannot wait to take the wheel
Of our adventures driven blind -
So a toast to she who most
Captures brilliance, her reflection
Who brings me dreams filmed in widescreen
Whose heart I provide protection
May glasses glint with prismed tint
And all the wine be drawn
Here we celebrate the dawn
To the beginning of us all

Poem: It Was The End

The earth is dead,
The sky is scorched,
The world’s a wasteland
It’s all been torched.

The missiles screamed,
The people died,
The believers surrendered
And the children cried.

The bunkers were built,
The holes were dug,
The fathers spoke softly
And mothers’ skirts were tugged.

The buttons were pressed
The decision was made,
The bullets went wild
And they formed their brigades.

The soldiers were trained,
The boys were stolen
The declaration was heard
And the egos were swollen.

The insults were hurled,
The homeland was naïve,
Lies were spun
And politicians deceived.

The shouts were heard
Patience was thinning,
The leaders were angry,
It was the beginning.

Poem: End of the Movie

Toast is done
Buttered up and jellied
Scrambled eggs dominate my plate
Bacon dings in its radioactive shelter
The spoon lies motionless in the chocolate milk
A napkin under the plate
My feet on the couch
A movie on the screen
My darling there
To share breakfast at night

She always steals my bacon
I always eat her eggs
The glass is half full for both of us
Her half is always gone first
And she licks the spoon
After all the turns are taken
Our heads share a pillow
Our feet share a seat
Our forms share a blanket
Our hearts share a smile

Soon the movie vanishes
The sound is distant
We weren’t going to watch it anyways
Her eyes petal closed
Mine always strain to watch
Before we fall to slumber
The cradle of each other
