I spend a lot of time thinking about
How, when I look up at night, I'm not actually looking 'up' but
rather out. Out into whatever hemisphere of the universe happens to
not be blocked by the earth under my feet. How on the opposite side
of the planet the sun is baking away overhead somewhere. How the
stars I see are in fact perceptible because of the relatively
infinitesimal number of photons that streamed out, flew across
space for years - avoiding dust and being pulled to and fro by
gravity - and just happened to land in the tiny spot that is my
pupil.
