My Notes edit

My self-summary

Occasionally, I build robots and skydive (not concurrently).

Visiting home right now for a few weeks.

I love adventure. Usually, this takes the form of hiking, camping, or other travel. I finally camped at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, knocking one big item off of my list, and I'd gladly go back. Also made it to Alaska recently. I've been to China, Spain, France, and The Netherlands, too.

OKCupid tells me I'm "The Last Man on Earth". I like to think of positive aspects of the term, but I really think this is a polite way of saying "misogynistic asshole". I think a better description I've been assigned is "opportunistic". I always liked the term "Southern gentleman".

I'm able to hear the odd-frequencied inaudible (to all others) hum of a powered-on television upon entering a home. For some reason, the sound does not resonate well in my mind, and drives me crazy like a dog with a whistle.

I'm originally from the 'burbs around New Orleans. I don't really support pride for things one is born into, but the place I call home is pretty awesome, and I miss things (such as Morgus). I'm a grad student in Electrical Engineering at ASU. I'm in this program called Arts, Media and Engineering, but sometimes forget about that, as I'm often found helping students build circuits as I TA a lab. I prefer to define myself mostly by my other activities such as traveling, camping, hiking, rock climbing, cooking, napping, reading, exercising, playing music (guitar, keyboard, iPod, or other), and anything that qualifies as a good time in my increasingly hedonistic lifestyle. At the end of each day, I like to have a good, new, and hilarious story to tell.

I'm really getting into traveling to see, observe, and appreciate the world in which we live. And, I'm trying to play my guitar more and more.

I really miss DJing at my old college radio station, WTUL. Most every other college station I come across is just plain awful. I recently experimented a bit with the other type of DJing.

A part of me wants to go live in the middle of nowhere for a while. Or hike somewhere for a year or so.

I do not tolerate drama. Passion...OK, drama...no.

What I'm doing with my life

Trying my hardest to enjoy it.

Working on playing bass and keyboard simultaneously.

Getting in better shape all the time.

Trying to be more productive and creative.

Trying to get my shit together.

I'm really good at

math and deep-frying.

Culinary experimentation.

Getting better at things.

Making light of everything.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

My harelip? Or my eyes? Probably the harelip.

Eventually most people ask me if I'm in the circus.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Ender's Game, It, Asimov's short fiction, Childhood's End, Rendezvous with Rama, Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Harry Potter, Lonely Planet, A Confederacy of Dunces, The God Delusion, David Sedaris, The Joy of Mathematics, The Selfish Gene, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and mind-blowing non-fiction. Plus, Calvin & Hobbes. I'd like to read most books, and learn everything. Probably not possible, but I'm trying. I started reading recreationally pretty late in life. I started off with a lot of sci-fi, but have moved past that since. Also, I don't know why, but I love Archie and all his pals' books. Currently reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Directors: Romero, Terry Gilliam, Wes Anderson, Luc Besson, Michael Gondry, the Coen Brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lars Von Trier, David Cronenberg, Robert Rodgriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, David Mamet, John Waters, et cetera. Anything from French New Wave and action movies, to golden age classics and foreign movies. I really, really like movies, even pretty bad ones.

Music: Battles, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Faith No More, King Crimson, Beck, Quintron, Bjork, Daft Punk, The Mars Volta, Eric Serra, Failure, Muse, David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Dälek, Ernie K-Doe, Death From Above 1979, Cornelius, Joanna Newsom, Lovage, Peeping Tom, and tons and tons more. Just about anything but late 90s - present popular music, yes, even country (before Garth Brooks ruined it). I listened to a lot of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Nine Inch Nails back in the day. Still do, but just not so much.

Food: Everything that's insanely terrible for you, but I avoid that stuff, except for sometimes when I'm out or special occasions. My regular diet is almost de facto vegetarian, but I love a good burger or steak. Usually found eating dried fruit from Trader Joe's or vegetables I've never tried before. Some people say I'm the only non-vegetarian they know who checks the ingredients in food.

The six things I could never do without

Air Conditioning (while in a warm/hot climate), books, music, film, the middle of nowhere, and curiosity.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

everything, from movies and existential dilemmas to the proper way to cut a vegetable.

On a typical Friday night I am

either doing something fun and insane, or making dinner and watching a movie with some wine. Red wine. I could easily be preparing for or en route to a weekend getaway, too. Never enough road trips. Maybe I'm at a bar seeing some form of live music.

...probably at the brewery down the street.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I'm on this semi-pornographic website, www.wetriffs.com, brought to you by xkcd. I didn't submit the photo or even make it for that website.

I stripped at a bachelorette party one time, but that's not so private considering all the pictures that were taken.

You should message me if

...you think anything, no matter how tasteless, can be the center of a great joke.

...you want to do awesome things or have a good time (e.g., skip town, camp, day-drink, hobo-beat, deep-fry, see live music, go to an art show, and so on). Or if you want to have conversations about anything deep or remarkably simple.

...you want to go on a road trip with a total stranger.

...you want to climb a mountain.

...you want to jam.

...you want to have a beer.
