My Notes edit

My self-summary

Literature, astronomy, and scuba diving. Perhaps not the three major interests you would expect someone to have at the same time, but for
me they're all equally fascinating.

I've been an avid reader for most of my life, and my bookcases contain
everything from Paradise Lost to pulp science fiction. I spent most of my completely lackluster years in high school with my nose in a science
fiction novel, which led to my interest in astronomy and the space program. I also enjoy more serious and weighty written works, although my taste in literature tends to be focused on particular authors or genres.

I'm a recovering computer gaming addict who occasionally lapses back
into an all night gaming session, although lately I tend to spend more
bleary eyed, caffeine fueled hours experimenting with 3d Studio Max
than gaming. I'm definitely a techie, and could probably open a store
with the sheer amount of spare computer parts and electronics I've
accumulated. In addition to enjoying these more introspective and creative pursuits, I also have the need to get out and engage in activities regularly, which is where scuba diving comes in. It's right at the crossroads of my love of technology and my fascination with hidden, distant, and alien places. Eventually I want to try sky diving and travel a bit, but for now I have more than enough expensive hobbies for my limited budget.

As for my general outlook on life, I'm a little cynical (comes from my
knowledge of history) but I maintain a positive attitude and a good sense of humor in the face of the frustrations and disappointments that life
sometimes presents. I'm easy to get along with, and make an effort to
be polite and helpful. While I'm not a total introvert I do prefer the
company of some good friends to a room full of strangers, which is why
I'm not into partying or clubbing. Generally, any social gathering where one has to shout to be heard is more crowded than I would like.

To sum up, imagine a quirky, slightly shy computer geek with a penchant
for Milton and an adventurous streak, and you'll have a fair idea of
what I'm like.

What I'm doing with my life

I work full time, and attend night classes at the local community college, so my weekdays are very busy, and on weekends I'm usually diving or doing something with friends. I occasionally feel like I never have a chance to relax and unwind, but believe that it's much better to have too little spare time than too much. I know what it's like to have nothing to do and sink into boredom and apathy, and have no desire to experience that again.

I'm really good at

Doodling apparently, since I get paid to do it. I work as a draftsman and am fairly proficient in several 3d modeling and image editing programs. I'm pretty good at fixing computers when they break. Also, I can hold my breath for a long time.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Probably that I wear glasses, or that I seem really serious.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Lately most of my reading has been non-fiction history titles, such as A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century, Castles of Steel, A Brief History of Byzantium, and Victory of the West. Strangely enough, despite being an atheist I still have a soft spot for C.S. Lewis, and can say that his retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, Till We Have Faces, is one of my favorite fantasy novels.

Some movies I like are Children of Men, Blade Runner, Threads (no, it's not a movie about fashionable clothing), and The Wicker Man (the original, not the awful Nicholas Cage remake).

I don't watch much TV, but I do enjoy Black Adder, MST3k, and Firefly, all of which are sadly off the air now.

My Winamp playlist usually contains music by one of the following groups/musicians: Leaves Eyes, Thomas Dolby, Kamelot, Nightwish, Orbital, KMFDM, The Alpha Conspiracy, Iris, and Soviet. I also have a rather unusual interest in secular medieval music, and especially enjoy the works of Raimon de Miraval and Martin Codax.
I really like the Teaching Company's lecture on CD series because they give me something educational to listen to when I'm stuck in traffic.

The six things I could never do without

Mechanical pencils, my computer, friends, the senses of sight, sound, and touch (smell and taste I could do without, but not those three.)

On a typical Friday night I am

Outside staring at the sky if the weather is good, inside with a book if it's not. Getting my gear ready if I have a dive planned Saturday morning.

You should message me if

You're a cool, nice, all-around good person looking for a new friend or possibly more.
