My Notes edit
My self-summary
urk. A couple of paragraphs? That's not much when I have something that I want to say, but here? All of a sudden that sounds like a lot.
I'm a major procrastinator. I'll get back to you with the rest later.
Okay, it's later. Much later, in fact, and I still don't like the idea of writing a "self-summary" any better than when I first registered. How 'bout just a list?
I generally do my grocery shopping around midnight. I've been wearing contact lenses for so long that when I try to play ping-pong with my glasses on, I always miss the ball. I eat more dairy products than anyone I know, but not much meat. (mmmm, cheese!) I love playing games, including Role Playing Games, Board Games, CCGs, miniatures games. I have a motorcycle and it gets just over 45mpg - what a great excuse to ride a cycle around! I don't notice most smells until someone points them out to me, except for food smells - I notice those right away. I'm listening to Morning Edition on the NPR website right now. I'd rather go to a concert than own to a CD. I had to get a new library card because my last one wore out. I enjoy exercising, but I get bored running or biking so I alternate between listening to lectures and music. I've been stuffing unnecessary belongings into storage for years, but right now I'm going through them all and happily ridding myself of at least half. I think bamboo is the coolest building material ever.
What I'm doing with my life
Walking to work & biking to the grocery store.
Considering going back to school.
Going to see Dropkick Murphys and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones on Monday!
I'm really good at
Learning.
I'm a pretty good cook, and I really enjoy it when I take the time.
Parallel parking, which I've always thought was pretty easy. I wonder if lots of people think it is easy and the few people who don't like it give it a bad reputation.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
The first books I remember enjoying are The Chronicles of Narnia, Where the Red Fern Grows, and The Call of the Wild, all of which I later reread and still liked.
Sherri S Tepper, Orson Scott Card, and Issac Asimov are my three favorite Science Fiction authors. I just noticed that all three of my favorites have rather strong religious views: one's a new-ager, one's Mormon, and one's an outspoken atheist. (Neil Stephenson and William Gibson deserve honorable mentions for Sci-Fi.)
George RR Martin, JRR Tolkien, Jim Butcher, and CS Lewis are among my favorites for fantasy. I also like Dean Koontz (Odd Thomas), Neil Gaimon (Neverwhere), and a handful of mystery/adventure writers who's names don't come to mind.
Modern non-fiction books just don't stand out to me the same way that novels do, and the classics make me feel like I should be more of a scholar before I put them in a list of favorites. Or, it could be that it's hard to pick favorites when there are multiple points of both agreement and disagreement with a non-fiction author. I agree with William James about religion and how to make decisions, and with Aristotle on the ethics of ignorance and on friendship.
Movies:
Star Wars (the old ones), Seven Samurai, The Shawshank Redemption, Amalie, Batman Begins, The Usual Suspects, Life is Beautiful, Aladdin, The Breakfast Club.
It saddens me that I have to add "the old ones" when I say I like the Indiana Jones series:(
Music:
They Might Be Giants, The White Stripes, KC and the Sunshine Band, Lords of Acid, Frank Zappa, The Atomic Fireballs, Weird Al Yankovic, Rob Zombie, The Ramones, The Invaders, Bjork, Tracy Chapman, Abney Park, lots more - especially if it is good dance music or has intriguing lyrics. I also love going to concerts, but prefer small venues to large ones.
Food:
Curry, seafood, salads with blue cheese dressing, French onion soup. I particularly enjoy anything I can make myself, because the act of cooking makes the food taste better when you finally get to eat it. I also love eating at restaurants though. I grew up with my parents in the business and spent a lot of time in restaurants as a child, so I'm comfortable in restaurants. My version of "comfort food" is sitting at a restaurant with a friend or a book for four hours.
Software & Websites:
That's right, I'm geeky enough to add this section! Wait a year or two and it will seem perfectly natural to have this question included in personal profiles.
Firefox, Media Monkey, Soulseek, Switch off, Wikipedia, OkCupid, Alternet, Digg, Questionable Content, xkcd, netflix, BBC, and NPR.
(I own a PC because they're cheap, but I'm not opposed to Macs. Although I will make fun of you if you claim that Macs never crash and then yours crashes.)
The six things I could never do without
Stimulating conversation
Good friends
Internet access
Books and libraries
NPR and BBC radio
The freedom to change my mind - important when I'm wrong about something, which, I hope, will happen less often as I change my mind more.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to make the people around me happier.
Recently, I've spent a fair amount of time thinking about relationships, both romantic relationships and friendships, because of trends and behaviors I've observed around me. "Trends and behaviors?" Maybe that should be "Trends in behaviors," or "Trends in behavior." What I was trying to say in fewer words is that I keep seeing the same people make the same mistakes over and over. It leads to to wonder if what I view as a series mistakes are actually a measurable and stable aspect of personality, and if so, whether they can be changed. (Or, if not changed, at least channeled so as to cause less pain to one's self and others.) Also, I wonder what mistakes I habitually make, and if I should be doing something to change my behavior.
