My Notes edit

My self-summary

My name's Jason, and for the most part I'm your typical nerd. I tend to come across as the quiet type, and some mistake that for being antisocial, but I really do enjoy being around people. I spend much of my free time reading, watching movies, conversing with friends, listening to music, or putzing about on the interwebs. Sometimes all at once, but I can't keep that up for very long.

I enjoy art, but haven't produced much of my own for a little while. I do have a gallery at deviantART if you should want to have a look.

Random stuff for a higher profile completion percentage:
  • I like alliterations
  • My favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip
  • lolcats make me laugh
  • My TV's almost always on Science, Discovery, Sci-Fi, or Cartoon Network
  • Somewhere out there is a video of me trying (unsuccessfully) to drink a gallon of milk in an hour
  • I once had my beard set on fire in a Starbucks
  • In high school a friend and I organized an event for World History where the class battled with cardboard swords in the gymnasium while the rest of the school watched
  • I visit thesaurus.com recreationally
  • I know how to say and spell the longest word in the English language according to Oxford's English Dictionary
  • Half of the books on my shelf are learning/reference, the other half are sci-fi/fantasy
  • I like road trips. My personal record so far is 1400 miles one way.
  • I do well with things that take little skill but lots of patience
  • I like puns, the cheesier the better
  • I used to play D&D, but haven't had the opportunity for a while

What I'm doing with my life

I've got a desk job at a corporation at the moment. It's a bit "Office Space" sometimes, but it's not so bad. I'm ultimately hoping to get back into a web development career, though, so I'm just trying to stay sharp with that for now.

I'm really good at

Well, I've spent most of my life around computers, and people that work with them, so I'd say I'm fairly good with computers.

I'm a decent writer, I think, but most of my writing's of a social or personal nature. I've written a couple short stories but don't enjoy it as much as I do writing instructions, deviantArt journals, comments, messages, etc.

I'm pretty good at working with my hands. I like to make things out of chainmaille with rings so small they can be scattered with a breath. I've made several sterling silver necklaces, and have a tendency to give them away.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

My beard, I guess. I have a rather long and unkempt looking goatee which I've grown pretty fond of.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books:
  • Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
  • Geeks by Jon Katz
  • Mort by Terry Pratchett
  • Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Surprisingly, I'm not a big fan of the LOTR books. I love the movies, but there's something about Tolkien's writing style in those books that just doesn't sit well with me. I do like The Hobbit, but I haven't read it in years.

Movies: The 13th Warrior, 300, Batman Begins, The Boondock Saints, Dark City, Donnie Darko, Children of Men, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Groundhog Day, LOTR, Man From Earth, Matrix, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Princess Mononoke, Shaun of the Dead, Spirited Away, Star Wars 4-6, Sunshine, Taxi Driver, The Professional, V for Vendetta, What Dreams May Come

I like action, fantasy, comedy, and sometimes historical movies. Not a big fan of horror/thriller unless it's actually something original and interesting. The recent "let's have a bunch of people get tortured to death" fad is getting on my nerves =/

Music: (in order of preference, according to last.fm)
Stabbing Westward, Goldfrapp, Death Cab for Cutie, Ladytron, Stars, Sense Field, Yoko Kanno, She Wants Revenge, Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds to Mars, Eisley, The Prodigy, Thornley, Muse, Shiny Toy Guns, Portishead, The Seatbelts, Snow Patrol, E Nomine, Coldplay, Dan Meyer (smashmethod), Bush, Chevelle, Earshot, Finger Eleven, HIM, Depeche Mode, Strata, Sigur Ros, Hinder, Dream Theater, Living Things, Eiffel 65, 10 Years, Gravity Kills, Moby, The All-American Rejects, Feeder, Crossfade, DJ Z-Trip, Three Days Grace, Placebo, Acceptance, A Perfect Circle, Tegan and Sara, Weezer, The Killers, The Music, AFI, Rob Dougan

I listen to everything but country and rap. I'm not interested in hearing about how someone's dog died...or their dawg.

Foods:
I'm a real sucker for Chinese. I once worked at a grocery store next to a Chinese restaurant and ate their buffet 5 times a week for a year.

I eat a lot of chicken and rice, usually at the same time. I like to experiment with the chicken, for variety, and have come up with a few interesting recipes. My favorite so far is Jager Chicken. Diced chicken simmered in Jagermeister until it's a rich, reddish brown, then mixed with rice. Mmmmmmmmm

The six things I could never do without

  1. Music
  2. Tea
  3. Rice & chicken
  4. Internet
  5. People
  6. Books

I spend a lot of time thinking about

A variety of things, really. I put a lot of stock in self improvement, so I take a lot of time to look at myself and see whether or not I'm on my way to becoming the person I want to be, and if not, what I need to do to get there from here.

I also spend a lot of time mulling over problems. Most of the time the problems are just a challenging bit of code, but I also tend to take a problem-solving approach to my own life and that of my friends. This, in itself, has caused a few problems now and then, as I will sometimes find myself offering advice when I really should have been offering a sympathetic ear, but I'm making an effort to recognize and change that.

I like thinking about recent scientific discoveries, new theories, new developments, what's on the horizon. I don't particularly have a mind for scientific endeavour, but I love the results.

And I spend a fair amount of time fantasizing and imagining. Of course, I'm sure damn near everyone does to some degree, but this section would be incomplete without at least mentioning it. And it serves as fair warning. If you're the type to ask "what are you thinking about?" you'd better be prepared for something like "the two of us bare-chested and a-dragonback with bolts of lightning streaming from our hands." Sure it sounds crazy, but I thought about it, and you asked.

On a typical Friday night I am

Usually at home reading, watching TV, or doing something on the computer. If any decent movies are out I like to go see them in theater, and if any of my friends are in town I'll usually be running around with them somewhere.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I'm a bit of a "grammar nazi" >.>

I never think less of a person for not being able to spell a certain word, or for making a mistake, as long as they make a token effort and are willing to learn & improve. I love it when people point out a mistake I made in something I've written, and never take it negatively, so I always hope to find like-minded people in that regard. I understand, however, that a lot of people don't care to improve their writing, and would rather not be corrected, so I keep it to a minimum except with a few close friends.
