I am intellectual, reserved, and warm.

My Self-Summary

Since self-summary isn't very fun, instead here's a non-comprehensive list of things that really excite me...

Music: I'm learning to play violin and lap steel guitar. I maintain an Amazon Prime account primarily so that I can satisfy my music-listening whims while still purchasing cds--I like having physical media.

Computers: I'm one of those nerdy programmer types. I spent a lot of time setting up just the right system for getting access from anywhere to all of my music and old email while keeping it stored on my computer at home.

Learning: I've purchased OChem and Bioinformatics textbooks recently. I'm also still working on a couple of philosophy of science papers that I started writing while I was in grad school.

Reading: Reading good literature is one of my favorite activities. Having books on my bookshelves makes me feel at home.

Food: I really like eating it and cooking it. I'm in the habit of grilling steak for dinner once a week. Implementing steak night has definitely improved my quality of life.

Photography: I have an old 8x10 field camera that I'm hoping to use more. Finally satisfying my long-held desire to own a TLR, I bought myself an old Minolta Autocord for my birthday.

Athletics: I'm particularly fond of going cycling and playing volleyball.

What I’m doing with my life

I haven't decided yet. My current job (managing a bunch of public-use computers at Stanford) and living situation are comfortable for now, but I don't plan on continuing with them permanently. Leading candidates for the future include:

Staying in the Bay Area, continuing with the variety of activities that I enjoy pursuing here, and creating open-source computer programs for research labs as my primary means for paying the exorbitant Bay Area rent.

Going back to finish up my Philosophy PhD and then looking for a job as a professor; ideally I'd be able to get a job at Stanford or Berkeley so that I could come back to the Bay, but the job market isn't always kind, so this option involves a lot more geographical uncertainty.

Inventing a time machine and going back in time to become an 18th century intellectual. (Ah, the good old days before hyperspecialization, when one could aspire to be a polymath.)

I’m really good at

Pretty much anything academic; as an undergrad I majored in physics and math while spending my summers alternating between learning languages and working at a biology lab. I then moved on to spending a lot of time on philosophy and computer programming. I also make tasty mushroom risotto.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: In Search of Lost Time by Proust, Love in the Time of Cholera by Garcia Marquez, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Chabon, Angle of Repose by Stegner, Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, The Plague by Camus, A Song of Ice and Fire by Martin, Good Omens by Gaiman and Pratchett, Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Rushdie, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Kuhn, De Anima by Aristotle, The Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science by Kant

Movies: The Life of Brian, Little Miss Sunshine, The Shawshank Redemption

Television: Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Wire, Deadwood, Black Adder, Arrested Development, The Office (British, although the American version has grown on me), Firefly

Classical Music: Beethoven symphonies and string quartets, Bach solo violin and cello works, Mozart piano concerti, Barber and Sibelius violin concerti, Brahms violin sonatas

Indie Pop/Rock: The New Pornographers, The Shins, Modern Skirts, The Format, Fountains of Wayne, Ben Kweller, Jimmy Eat World, Motion City Soundtrack, Rilo Kiley, Pavement, Built to Spill, Spoon

Jazz: Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, anything 60's Blue Note

Classic Rock: The Beatles, Cream, The Who, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Eric Clapton

Comics: xkcd, Pearls Before Swine, Questionable Content
