My self-summary
My name is Brent, and I am a compulsive hippopotamus-eater. It all
started innocently enough--eating hippopotami socially, you
know--but soon, habit became addiction, and before I knew it, I was
bloated and my teeth were sore, and there were half-eaten
hippopotamus noses littering the two-story cardboard box I share
with my three uncles, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego...
Hmmm. Let's have some interests, in case anyone ever actually
searches for those.
Creative writing,
roleplaying
games,
psychology,
hiking, the political situations in
places like
Burma,
good
science fiction,
good fantasy,
global warming (as in,
"prevention thereof," not as in "lifestyle choice"),
messing
with people's minds,
theoretical
metaphysics,
redundancies,
practical
metaphysics,
oxymorons, and let's face it,
sex. Not necessarily
in that order.
What else can I tell you about me... Okay, how's this? I'm
poor but rarely
cheap,
blunt but not
unkind,
cynical but almost never
pessimistic,
fatalistic but never
apathetic,
obnoxious but
seldom
belligerent,
opinionated but never
narrow-minded,
lecherous but
not in a bad way, a
bleeding heart but not a
sap.
I show most of the symptoms of depression, except being unhappy. My
chemical addictions include refined sugar, peanut butter, and
water; I'm trying to cut down on exactly one of those. I can be
very slightly OCD sometimes, but don't worry--I'm not obsessive or
compulsive about it.
OkCupid: Now in Spanish!
¡Fijáos! Soy bilingüe, o algo así.
Habrá más aquí cuando me venga algo que se valga escribir.
No os quedéis en suspenso...
What I'm doing with my life
I'm pretty sure if you leave this section blank, you automatically
get points toward "less ambitious."
I'm really good at
Hugs. Backrubs. Logic. Fucking with overly logical people. Fucking
with overly illogical people. Having a hard skull. I mean this
literally, though my friends will tell you it also applies
figuratively. Speaking resonantly. Expressing myself eloquently.
Expressing myself vulgarly. Mixing those last two. Making up
stories on the fly. Keeping a clear head even when the situation
has progressed past the point where that will be useful. Analyzing
movie characters. Finding cool places to kill time.
On the more obscure side, I have a bizarre talent for spotting
iambic pentameter in everyday speech, and I seem to have an
exceptional resistance to animal venoms (jellyfish stings and the
like). Yeah, don't I seem sexier now?
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me
On a good day, it's whatever bizarre thing I'm doing at the
moment.
Any other day... Probably that I'm not wearing shoes, if I'm
anywhere I can get away with it.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books: Yeah, I mostly read fantasy novels and comic books. This
isn't because I'm lazy; it's because I'm a geek. Favorite books
include the
His Dark Materials trilogy,
Neverwhere,
The Hitchhiker's
Trilogy (all five books of it),
The Chronicles of
Narnia,
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by
Christopher Moore,
Tamsin by Peter S. Beagle, and of course
Harry Potter,
not necessarily in that order. I'm convinced
Shel Silverstein influenced my
psychological development in ways I will never consciously
understand.
For comic books, favorites include
Sandman, Fables, Lucifer, Preacher, and
The Books
of Magic.
Once in a while, I start a highly informative nonfiction book that
will make me a wiser, more knowledgeable person... Then about three
chapters in, I get bored and pick up the latest Neil Gaiman
book.
Outside the realm of flattened dead trees, my regular readings
include about a dozen webcomics, an online environmental rag called
Grist, and I seem to be mildly
addicted to
BBC News.
Movies: To name a few (and there are many)...
Pulp Fiction,
Firefly/
Serenity,
Brick,
Princess Mononoke,
Lord of the
Rings,
Star
Wars (the good ones),
Lock, Stock
and Two Smoking Barrels,
28 Days Later,
The Last Unicorn,
The Big
Lebowski,
Labyrinth,
The Princess Bride. If you're
into any of those, we could probably kill some time together.
Music: Hmmm. Rather than typing a long--and in all likelihood
meaningless--list of bands, here are some songs I find
extraordinarily insightful or otherwise meaningful.
"Anna Begins" -
Counting Crows
"Pillar of Davidson" -
Live
"Crazy" -
Seal
"Whatever It Takes" - Sinéad Lohan
"Tribute" - Tenacious D
"Broadsword" -
Jethro Tull
"Inside Out" -
Eve
6
"Excuse Me Mister" - Ben Harper
"Heal" -
Heather
Nova
"Bust a Move" - Young MC
"If I Had a Rocket Launcher" -
Bruce Cockburn
"The Songs That We Sing" - Charlotte Gainsbourg
"On the Turning Away" - Pink Floyd
"Center of the Sun" -
Conjure One
Next time you're on whatever program you use to steal music, give
one or two of those a listen. It might give you a glimpse into the
cacophonous maelstrom that is my mind... Or it might just be good
music.
A few artists that probably should be on that list, but I haven't
worked out which song yet:
Central Funktion,
R.E.M.,
Nightwish,
Barenaked Ladies,
Tori Amos,
P.M. Dawn,
Bad Religion,
Carbon
Leaf.
Foods: Spicy things... Meat... Dessert... Preferably the first two
in combination, followed separately by the last, but I suppose
that's negotiable.
The six things I could never do without
1. Um... Your mom?
2. Um... My mom. But for completely different reasons than your
mom, I assure you!
3. Okay, not coming up with anything... Pause while I scan everyone
else's profile for inspiration.
4. Apparently, my iPod. I don't actually own an iPod, but it's what
everyone else said, and you can tell I'm a huge conformist,
right?
5. Seriously, what the fuck kind of question is this?
6. What am I leaving out... Oh, yeah. Your mom.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What I would do if I had superpowers. Oh, and also lemurs.
On a typical Friday night I am
A woman named Shirley. Are you glad you asked?
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here
Hey, I already admitted that I play roleplaying games. What do you
want next? My masturbation schedule?
You should message me if
Go for it. Seriously. No criteria here; if you get the urge, talk
to me.
