I am Legend. Also, I am curious, and bemused..

My Self-Summary

I'm a grad student at UMich, mostly studying economics. But I have phenomenally varied interests. "I'm trying to learn everything" is a cliché, but I live that cliché with gusto. You might call me a bibliophile. (No, this does not mean that I lust after books.) I also enjoy games and game theory.

My role model is Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbes. Or possibly Gaius Baltar from Battlestar Galactica.

What I’m doing with my life

Oh, didn't I just mention? I'm a grad student, getting my PhD. In ten years, I'll most likely be a stuffy professor, but there's always a chance that I'll find a more interesting opportunity. Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to start a tech company, write a book, run for office, and solve all the world's problems. Ambition-wise, I'm still that kid.

I’m really good at

Math. Metaphor. Trivia (I was on my college's Quiz Bowl team). Debate. Crossword puzzles, but only on Mondays (weird, right?). Board games, like Settlers of Catan. Being a boyfriend (letters of recommendation available upon request). Getting the jokes in xkcd.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm usually smiling wryly. I don't think that's intentional; it's just the way my mouth moves. Also, I'm probably listening to an audiobook; I walk around a lot, and I don't believe in letting that time go to waste.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Prep, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, some Kurt Vonnegut, the extraordinary Harry Potter books, Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Fables, Hellboy, Y: The Last Man, Freakonomics and Gödel, Escher, Bach.

Movies: Stranger Than Fiction, Persepolis, There Will Be Blood, Office Space, Knocked Up, Moulin Rouge, Kill Bill, and the entire Pixar oeuvre. (Up brought tears to my eyes.)

TV: 30 Rock, The Office, Lost, Six Feet Under, True Blood, Mad Men and Firefly. I'm a Joss Whedon fan in general, and I play along with Jeopardy! whenever possible. The Simpsons influenced me tremendously, back when it was brilliant.

Music: Vampire Weekend, The Arcade Fire, Belle and Sebastian, the more upbeat songs of Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service and the geeky folk stylings of Jonathan Coulton. My theme song (and I say this with an appropriate level of irony) is "Center of Attention" by Guster. I also appreciate a handful of brilliant musicals, especially Avenue Q.

Food: Sushi, Indian and Thai, plus lots of fruits and vegetables. I'm a pesco-vegetarian, mainly out of a desire for immortality. (In the words of Woody Allen: "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying.") I also consume quite a bit of green tea.

The six things I could never do without

Books. Magazines (as in The Atlantic, not Cosmo). Dance Dance Revolution. Good hygiene. A Mac. And a captive audience to appreciate my witticisms.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The notion of individual responsibility, and how it relates to public policy. I study economics because I think of it as applied philosophy.

I also spent a lot of time thinking about games. I was an utter video game addict for most of my life. I rarely touch them these days (except for DDR, which I play daily). But it feels like there ought to be a way to use games to teach useful skills and knowledge to people, or to make everyday tasks more fun.

On a typical Friday night I am

Reading. But if you have any other recommendations, I'll take them under advisement.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Most people go meta on this question—understandably. But here's something: I campaigned for Ralph Nader in 2000. I was young and naïve; please don't tell anyone.

You should message me if

You are a future Nobel laureate, in any field; or, you are some mixture of Hermione Granger and Tina Fey; or, you have a really brilliant opening line that would be wasted on most people and you need someone to appreciate all of its many subtle layers; or, my profile is making you curiouser and curiouser.
