My Notes edit

My self-summary

In 1983, as a freeelance writer in a town that inspires long-distance travel, I found the little RESET button nestled on the back of my head, gave it a press, and abruptly escaped midwestern suburbia on a computer-laden recumbent bicycle... not realizing that in the process I was launching a whole career in technomadics after having falling into the "American Dream" (otherwise known as doing things you no longer enjoy to pay for things you don't want after all). Now, decades later, I'm still at it... preparing my nautical escape pod (a 44-foot steel pilothouse cutter-rigged sailboat) for open-ended blue-water voyaging on a global scale. I've written a few books over the years and am getting the itch to do so again, and I'm addicted to learning curves.

What I'm doing with my life

Frolicking in the strange domain where technology and adventure overlap... and occasionally writing about the process.

I'm really good at

Avoiding employment, conjuring gizmology, and turning the odd phrase.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

The pun daemon -- an autonomous process in my brain that subjects all input and output strings to a series of filters designed to spot lexical or parsing ambiguities, then quickly packages them as parenthetical inserts into conversation. Oh, and I'm 6'4" tall.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Lots, depending on context... impossible to answer this question accurately in less than a few thousand words!

The six things I could never do without

A lab, a sailboat (or at least a kayak!), a spirited pal, a net-connected Mac, music, and a sense of humor... not necessarily in that order.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Global sailing adventures and the technological underpinnings of my escape pod. In less-ambitious moments, I busy the ol' wetware with wordplay, geek expressionism, and music (I've played the flute for 30 years and am learning piano).

On a typical Friday night I am

Working on ship systems... reducing tonnage via eBay... perhaps even playing the piano. But what is this "Friday" of which you speak?

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

The aforementioned pun daemon has an associated command-line parameter. Just say "set punlev [x]" where x is a number between 0 and 9. The high extreme will reduce pun incidents to about one a day (and they're really good). A value in the 0-2 range... which you really don't want to do unless we're on our second glass of wine... can result in a high noise level. A good compromise is 5, which is the default value upon my exit from sleep state. The punlev parameter does not linearly affect internal pun generation as much as it regulates release into the output stream by applying a subjective quality filter.

You should message me if

You have a yen for nautical adventure coupled with a musical nature and an undercurrent of passion that is making you very, very restless...
