sensible, hopeful and helpful, independent and intelligent individual who has
lived a rich and varied life.
I've had a unique
background of having been raised in the "inner city" and having
also lived in various environments (including suburbia,
barrio, rural, etc.). My eyes, ears, taste buds (and tastes) took /
take advantage of my having been raised in one of the most
multiethnic /
cosmopolitan
cities in the U.S. (i.e., New York) and now living in another
(i.e., Los Angeles). I have traveled to/through all but 7 states. I
used to drive to the Bay Area often enough to almost
consider it a second home. My most memorable trip (so far) was a
stay in Cuba
(including a flight layover en route in Mexico City with an artist / friend taking me on an
informal tour of the National Palace focusing on Diego Rivera's murals).
Finally, the adjective "lefty" describes not only the hand that I
use for writing, but my politics.

My self-summary
What I'm doing with my life
While I do not quite consider myself a Renaissance man – the last
time that I checked, I haven’t been dead for 400+ years –- I am a
lifetime learner with a long and varied list of interests,
activities, etc. (e.g.,movies, music, museums, much more). For most of my life
(i.e., since graduating high school at age 16), I have concurrently
worn the "hats" of full-time worker and equivalent of full-time
student, continuing over the years to take classes in whatever may
interest me (after/before work or via Internet). On the one hand,
most of my many degrees and certificates haven’t been that useful.
On the other hand, ever since I got a Radiotelephone Operator’s
License, I haven’t had a single ocean liner stranded in my
bathtub.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me
That I am alive and breathing (otherwise, please call 911
immediately).
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
A) My list of favorite books would fill a book by itself. My “lit
list” includes Achebe (Nigeria’s first novelist),
Beckett, Cervantes, Dickens, Eliot, Faulkner, Garcia Marquez, Hemingway …
B) I'm [in] for the laughter / And here ever after / I'm here for whatever ... life brings." Fun includes a wide variety of interests including movies, music, museums, much more. My favorite directors list starts with Antonioni, Bertolucci, Chaplin, DeSica, Eisenstein, Fellini, Godard, Hitchcock, … but may start with Allen (i.e., earlier funny Woody), Bunuel, Coppola, .. on other days. (If I started my list of favorite directors at a different part of the alphabet (e.g., Kurosawa, Spike Lee, ... or Varda, Wertmuller, ... that list wouldn't have all EuroAmerican males.)
C) My musical favorites list is even longer (from Afro-Cuban jazz to Zydeco plus most everything in between).
D) I'm always willing to expand my palate and my horizons.
