I am eccentric, totally rad, and made of candy.
My Self-Summary
Profile v3.5:
I've been in NC for over a year now. I'm liking the place. It's
great.
I'm a video game developer. I think it's pretty awesome. If I
weren't doing that, I'd be teaching, which I have a lot of fun
with.
Aspiring drummer. I wail nightly. I don't know if I'm getting
better, but occasionally I like the sound of some of my creations.
I have a guitar, but I play considerably less, and I am very, very
bad.
Amateur magician. Very amateur. I haven't been doing this as much
as I'd like lately, but every now and then I'll pick up a book and
start shuffling cards or doing things with coins.
I write sometimes. More than I read. I've always got a story in my
head, always. I usually don't transcribe them very well, and most
of my writing ends up short and incomplete; regardless, I often get
very excited about my ideas and will babble on endlessly if you let
me.
I'm a movie lover and enjoy a handful of good TV shows. I also make
my own movies when I come up with a good idea and can get a cast
together (tricky, that bit is). I'm proud of a few of them.
I have a bit of a board game addiction. The common stuff like
Scrabble and Chess, but also the esoteric stuff like Last Night on
Earth and Arkham Horror.
I spend way too much time in coffee shops.
Other than the above, I'm a bit all over the place as far as things
I enjoy. I jump between fascinations pretty regularly.
I'm looking for friends. People to play games with or meet in
cheesy diners in the wee hours of the morning or just generally
putz around with. More interested in people who want to meet
offline, as I think it's a lot more valuable than internet message
tag.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm currently "between jobs," which is the nice cushy way of saying
newly unemployed.
Holding down a few hobby projects. Trying to get some of my more
promising projects in a position to sell them while I have the
opportunity.
Toying with the idea of pursuing a PhD.
I’m really good at
Mad science.
Thinking up stories. Some are good, some are bad.
Being very patient.
The first things people usually notice about me
Nobody's ever really mentioned anything, so I'll take a few wild
guesses:
My affinity for seamlessly shifting between extremely quiet and
extremely energetic.
That I often look like an academic professor.
It can sometimes be hard to pinpoint when I'm serious versus when
I'm not. People get it wrong frequently.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Terry Pratchett's
Discworld, the Premiere Press Game Development series, His Dark
Materials, Stranger in a Strange Land, Anansi Boys, American Gods,
Fragile Things, Smoke and Mirrors
Movies: Shawshank Redemption, Cowboy Bebop, Biozombie, Eternal
Sunshine, Amelie, Life Aquatic, Shaolin Soccer, Hot Fuzz
Music: Guns 'N Roses, Linkin' Park, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears,
Electric Six, Freezepop, Coheed and Cambria
Foods: Pizza, Japanese, Fantastic salads
I'm adding these next two sections, because, well, I enjoy these
things.
TV: Carnivale, Weeds, 30 Rock, The Office, Firefly, Trigun, Cowboy
Bebop, Boston Legal, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, Dexter,
House, Sliders, Lost, Six Feet Under
Games: Gears 2, Fallout 3, Final Fantasy 4-8, Chrono Trigger, Rock
Band, Half-Life & TF2, Disagaea, Xenosaga, Kingdom Hearts,
Smash, Mario Kart, Stuntman, Bioshock, Resident Evil 4
The six things I could never do without
(1)My laptop. I'm constantly engaged in some kind of
computer-related project.
(2)Food. I love food. I don't mean that I have a deep fondness for
foreign cuisine. I mean I get excited about every
meal.
(3)A pen and some paper to write/draw on.
That's all I've got for now.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Random technical solutions. Stories that I'd like to put into a
game/movie of some kind. The funniest way to tell a relatively
mundane story. Lyrics to songs that I don't know the lyrics to.
Ways to better myself. Philosophies and religions. How people do
really neat things.
On a typical Friday night I am
Relaxing at a local coffee shop or watching a movie. Or banging my
head against a computer trying to figure out why something won't
work.
Sometimes all of the above. Also potentially playing a game or
hacking around with some new project. Or just sitting around,
thinking.
You should message me if
(1) You want a pal to see live music with. I've been meaning to go
to more shows.
(2)You want to go head-to-head in Chess or Scrabble. It's so hard
to find a good opponent. Online or offline.
(3)You're dying to play co-op Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead, or Fable
2. Or Rock Band, Mario Kart, or Smash Brothers. Video games are
more fun multiplayer.
(4)You have an affinity for DVD box sets and a great show you'd
like to show me.
(5)You're an artist who'd like to work with me on a Big Game
Idea.
(6)You want someone to jam with. My drum talents aren't great, but
I'm learning.
(7)You know some great coin/card tricks. It's hard to find the
really cool stuff in books.
(8)You like sitting in coffee shops having long conversations
about... stuff.
(9)You want to show me something lovely and fun not in the above
list. I'm not picky.
I don't often message people. Not because you're not perfectly
wonderful, but because few respond. I guess I'm not pretty enough?
I don't know. I do respond to nearly 100% of all messages sent my
way, so feel free.
