My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
All right, time to write a new one of these, since I found I didn't really care for the last one. Let's see, what to write... Hell, I don't think anybody really reads these past the first couple of paragraphs, so I may as well be brief. Plus, I have about a thousand other "insights" into my personality on this site, so I guess that makes this the miscellaneous/introductory category.

It has always been my belief that a person should be the best version of themselves. In the words of Vince Lombardi, "We are going to chase perfection, knowing full well we will never achieve it, and in doing so we will achieve greatness." (That may have been paraphrased a bit, but the idea is perfectly preserved.) Another piece of wisdom actually comes from my father, "If you're bored, it's your own fault. Go do something." Therein lies success: hard work and engagement in what keeps you interested in living. As a result of trying to escape boredom, I read a lot, exercise a lot, trek outdoors a lot, and play some games here and there (video, board, and pen and paper). I guess you could say I'm a versatile conversationalist.

Well, that's good enough for this section. Feel free to comment on the above passage in a message. I can think of no better way to break the ice than, "Hey, your intro sucked."
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I graduated the University of Notre Dame almost three years ago now, and am substitute teaching and searching for other odd jobs before returning to graduate school next fall, pursuing a doctorate in Paleontology with an emphasis on paleoecology or invertebrate paleontology.

While it certainly not a glamorous position to be in, there were forces outside my control that forced me into it.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I'm good at pretty much anything outdoors, as well as the math and science necessary in my field. I'm also good at talking, which is probably why my career choice involves "professor", but think listening is usually more important.

I'm also a decent martial artist (HEMA practitioner) and a recent vote of my students rates my Soul Calibur skills at above average. Don't be fooled, though, the two are not synergistic.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I hate this question. It implies that people apparently go up to other people in the street and say, "Your hair is angelic!" This has not happened to me as of this writing. However, friends have told me I have intriguing eyes. Whether this was an initial observation or data gleaned from friendship-long study, I do not know.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

I most enjoy fanstasy and SF, and own practically every work by the Tolkien estate. Also treasured in my library are the Hitchhiker's "Trilogy" and the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe. I also enjoy LeGuin, Simmons, Heinlein, Aasimov, and C.S. Lewis. I also enjoy the history of medieval Europe, and have Beowulf, the Comedy, and the Song of Roland. I am also getting better acquainted with the Arthurian Legends, the Volsunga Saga, and Chaucer.

A paragraph should be set aside here for the sheer volume of academic material I read. It would be bad enough if it were just geology related, but I read a metric crapton of medieval and renaissance combat history, too. HEMA is as much a scholarly pursuit as it is an athletic one. So all the other modes of entertainment are enjoyed when not being absorbed in swords and science.

I have seen a lot of movies, and my parents have ingrained in my a respect for older movies (if they're good). Some favorites include Schindler's List, Alien, Indiana Jones, 39 Steps, Star Wars, Jaws, and Murder by Death. This is nowhere near an exhaustive list, just what first popped into my mind.

I will watch almost any TV show once to get an opinion on it, but my favorites are Modern Family, Fringe, the Mentalist, Castle, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Firefly, and Masterpiece Mystery Theatre.

I listen to lots of different music. In terms of popular music, I gravitate towards Classic Rock and shy away from Rap and Hip Hop. My classical favorites are Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Karl Orff, and Copland. I also like studying Medieval plainchant through Renaissance polyphony.

I hate grapefruit.

I believe there should be a games section here, too, so I will make one. My favorites are Apples to Apples, Trivial Pursuit, Cranium, Outburst, Taboo, Backgammon, and Chess. I do play some cards, but not very much. I like poker, gin, and authors (with the special "Authors" card sets). On the Playstation I indulge most often in the Souls series, the Project Soul series, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Dragon's Dogma, Heavenly Sword, and, yes, Assassin's Creed.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Friends and family, laptop, the Earth, a sound mind and body.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Personal finance and graduate work.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Probably reading.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Sorry, I don't really admit private things. That's why they're...you know...private.

you're reading this. Seriously, I just word-vomited on the keyboard for about twenty minutes. If you found it all worth reading, or even half of it worth reading, we'll probably get along pretty well.
