My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm looking for someone smart, funny and kind, whom I can root for, and who will pull my leg -- a long-term teammate, in a sense. If he has a wide variety of interests, perhaps on both sides of the science/art "divide," and enjoys the outdoors, that would be terrific, but really, not all of that is necessary. Open, equable geeks who make groan-inducing jokes are particularly welcome.

While an instantaneous (cosmic!) connection, complete with resounding 'click' noises is what many hope for, I'm more interested in the question of whether I can build something from the ground up with StrangerX. Answering this, for me, is a slower process, but no less intriguing, and includes such normal but wonderful things as friendship.

About me: I am a researcher/engineer who likes to sing, read and rock climb, and cares deeply about people. I wanted to keep this portion adjective-free, so I've compiled a somewhat arbitrary list of things about myself that might help paint a picture of sorts.

I like grey, cloudy days at least as much as bright, sunny ones. I enjoy being among pine trees, reading a research paper and singing about equally. Two activities from ancient times that I still find very satisfying are solving integrals and sitting on swings. I enjoy having something to push against -- a difficult problem at work, say, or a hike up a tall mountain. (Having said that, the shady oak grove nearby is actually as pleasurable to walk in as the top of said mountain.) My yoga practice is active, meditation practice is slowly reviving, and Tai Chi practice is sadly almost dead. In retrospect, the times when I have been alone and (unintentionally!) lost in a forest, or in a place where I didn't speak the language, have been the most memorable parts of those trips. I love maps of all sorts and always look at all the airport layout maps in the back of inflight magazines. While reading articles online, I sometimes start speaking out loud to the writer. (Strangely, they never speak back.) For the right person, I would seriously consider moving.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I design algorithms and analyze complex systems in my day job. I regularly sing, run, swim and do yoga, and often hike or rock climb. I read, I write, I bake, I travel.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Getting interested in new things, constantly being a student

Thinking clearly, seeing both sides of an argument, being open minded

Paying attention, listening to people (Incidentally, it appears that a huge fraction of people on here are good listeners. Hmm.)

Making random connections (e.g. between something from a movie years ago and something that happened at work today). Being able to remember totally pointless details from the distant past probably helps.

Making upside-down cakes, cinnamon rolls, paper lanterns (okay, maybe not "really good", but at least quite enthusiastic)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

(Not fully sure how much this section truly matters, but alright.)

Books (self-imposed limit of five lines):
Jane Austen and Margaret Atwood are generally wonderful.
The Dispossessed (Ursula K. Le Guin) and other sf&f too.
Flowers for Algernon (Daniel Keyes)
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Mark Haddon)
Middlemarch (George Eliot)

Tony Hoagland's Self-Improvement
Mary Oliver's The Place I Want To Get Back To

This is too complicated to get into here, and possibly also irrelevant. But to name three names, just to give a sense, I'll go with Claudio Monteverdi, Leonard Cohen and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

I like low-key dramas, but also (non-mindless) action movies, esp. if they have one or more of the following: sf&f, humor, a plot, female characters who get good action scenes. (Nope, I don't ask for much.)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How complex things are constructed and/or the dynamics within them: a novel, a museum, the traffic lights network, a sports league.

Not unrelated, I wonder if we wouldn't all be better off if we took our photos off this site.
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
I've said it all in the beginning, up top. But basically, feel free to message me without hesitation. I'm more than ready to reply, meet etc.

(Note: I realize that many people only want to message people near them, and that's cool. However, I am quite happy not to be restricted by geography. (Why make a hard problem harder?) Especially if there are work opportunities for me in your region in the long term, I'm willing to message you in the short term. (Bay Area folks, this means you!))
