I’m an author and nonprofit executive, an unchurched nature lover, all-weather bike commuter, and mountaineer. I like to talk (progressive) politics and tell stories. My work is brainy and serious, but I’m more comic than tragic.

To prepare my profile, I asked female friends for candid descriptions. My most endearing qualities, according to Terry R.: “GreenArrow64 brings out the best in people. He somehow knows what to say to make strangers, friends and family all feel good about themselves. He is a little quirky and has a self-deprecating sense of humor. That, in combination with his strong self-confidence, is incredibly charming.”

To make a long story short: I am newly empty nested. I direct a think tank. I climb mountains. I try not to suck at these things.

To make a short story longer: I live in Ballard. I work as a writer and social-change leader. I direct a policy research and communications center that is trying to make the Northwest a model of the green economy. We’re the largest progressive think tank in the Northwest, and I have done this for 20 years.

I'm healthy and fit and I love getting active in the outdoors: hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, you name it. But I'm looking for fun and romance, not necessarily an outdoors partner!

I'm also big on community. I host a giant bonfire on the beach every winter. This year, about 500 people came out for the pyromania, fire-roasted food, and friends. Oh, and I took up salsa dancing a year ago; I'm addicted now.

I’m also good at getting things done. I’m a hard worker.

Lisa Q. said about me, “If I had to choose three people to be stuck with on an island, [GreenArrow64] would be one of my top picks. I would feel protected and comforted that [he] was there, because of his methodical nature and his ability to stay calm under pressure.” Then she reconsidered and said, “Actually, [he] would never get himself in a place to be stuck on an island.”

(Also, because I'm not sure where else to put this, I'm good at sneezing around certain cats.)

I guess the first things people notice about me are my appearances:

Just finished "The Golden Spruce" by John Vaillant. My favorite writers (among many!) are Bill McKibben and Ivan Doig. I like to read (or listen to) the daily poem from NPR's Writer's Almanac. I also loves stories: told, written, filmed, you name it. I usually have music on, whatever else I’m doing: classical, jazz, blues, bluegrass, Latin, rock, pop, even PowWow. I do not watch much TV, except DVDs with my kids (yep, I've watched the entire Joss Whedon opus with them and I'm a sucker for Shakespeare in Love). Televised sports aren’t my cup of chai (exception: World Cup Soccer). I’m vegetarian (well, "pescatarian," really), and I'm not particular about what you eat. Make me a rhubarb pie and I might be yours for life.

I prefer lists of seven--better numerology. Not in any particular order:

1. My bicycle (and a great city to ride it in).
2. Meaningful work (and the hope it brings).
3. Proximity to wild places (so I can touch what feels sacred).
4. Stories (how people turn experience into community).
5. My kids (I’d take a bullet for them).
6. Music (all kinds).
7. Love (heat and light, sweet and salty connection).

In recent months, salsa dancing . . . my new hobby.

I think a woman’s voice is one of her sexiest assets.

You’re smart and playful. Your politics are fresh and progressive. You have a well developed sense of irony. You already have any children that you want, and they're well into double digits. You live in the city of Seattle or very close by, because I'm a locavore, datingwise. Your body is healthy, well cared for, and fit.
