I am snarky, amiable, and inquisitive.

My Self-Summary

I'm something of an everyman nerd who happens to be fairly amiable and eclectic. I'm sadly addicted to current events. I'm a very tall hobbit who lives, as all hobbits do, under a hill. I enjoy sending and receiving physical letters. I adore chocolate. I'm violently tickilish. I don't fit all the way into two dimensional spaces. Puns happen to be a vice of mine. I love cats. I'm an extrovert. I don't watch TV if I can help it (movies and dearly loved television shows on DVD, like Firefly, are exempt). For the moment, I've finished typing this.

What I’m doing with my life

Finishing up my second semester of graduate school. I'm going for a Masters degree in Social Work. Then I'm going to be sticking around the area, get a job and keep writing with the aim of getting a few pieces published.

I’m really good at

Making fun of bad movies. Writing poetry and fiction. I'm fairly friendly. I like to poke my nose into new and different things. I'm half-decent at dancing, but it's been a little while and I'm waaaaay rusty! Being vaguely intelligent; I know odd things. Improv. Theatre tech (it's been a while, though). Having adventures. Dry wit. Bawdy humour. British spelling, and all this kind of thing.

The first things people usually notice about me

Depends on the context, I suppose. I do gesticulate a lot, however.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Ah, fun. Books first. Be warned: I hate picking favorites. So now you get a mess of things I happen to like that are somewhat representative of my tastes.

The Dark Side of the Earth, the Demolished Man, the Face in the Frost, Choke, Neuromancer, Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash, the Doomsday Book, the Song of Ice and Fire series, Solaris, the Positronic Man, Job: A Comedy of Justice, The Puppet Masters, Babel-17, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Illustrated Man, Double Star, Revolt in 2100, Magic, Inc., Bloodchild and other stories, Beowulf, Tao te Ching, As a Man Thinketh, Sandman, Edward Eager, Neverwhere, The Chronicles of Narnia, E. Nesbitt, the C’thulhu Mythos, John Bellairs, Jack, The Nimble Holy-Water Clerk, The Alliterative Morte Arthure, Crucifixio Cristi, 1421: The Year the Chinese Discovered America, Soldat, MiG Pilot, P.J. O’Rourke, various and sundry works of poetry (most in mixed-anthology form), and I’m sure I’m not remembering one beloved read or another, but I’m afraid you’ll have to deal.

Music next.

Akira Yamaoka, The Birthday Massacre, Warren Zevon, Rammstein, the Cranberries, Pet Shop Boys, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Bad Religion, Rasputina, Nightwish, Morrissey, anything by The Muppets, Who, VAST, Flogging Molly, Green Day, Aqua, Slint, Dresden Dolls, Save Ferris, Collide, Arrogant Worms, NOFX, the Pillows, the Servant, Eve 6, Muse, Zeromancer, Hooverphonic, Offspring, Richard Thompson, Bella Morte, Spinal Tap, Android Lust, Poe, Tom Waits, Tori Amos, the Magnetic Fields, Power of Seven, Psykosonik, Enigma, and all the others that bounce around in my collection.

And movies.

Bubba Ho-tep, 12 Angry Men, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, American Psycho, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Blade Runner, classic Muppet movies, Dr. Strangelove, Aliens, Mr. Vampire Saga 4, Evil Ed, Monty Python, the Prestige, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Hellboy, Donnie Darko, Pan’s Labyrinth, Serenity, Night of the Living Dead, Forrest Gump, Big Trouble in Little China, The Great Escape, Bridge over the River Kwai, Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, Lawerence of Arabia, Harvey, In the Mouth of Madness, Brain Candy, The Fifth Element, Sin City, LOTR trilogy, Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, Nightmare Before Christmas, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Dark City, the Princess Bride, To Kill A Mockingbird. And, you know. A whole lot of others. This should give you an idea, though.

Finally, the idiot box-I’m a TV snob, so what I get is almost always on DVD, whether mooched or owned. Firefly, House, Battlestar Galactica (Seasons 1 and 2, mostly), NCIS, Cárnivale, Hellsing, Hellsing OVA, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Babylon 5, Clone High, Evangelion, Pete & Pete, Dead Like Me, Excel Saga, X-Files, Brimstone, Bullshit, Venture Brothers, Band of Brothers.

The six things I could never do without

Something to write with. Internet communication. A social circle. Books. Chocolate. Cats.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Everything I can. I try to have a rather wide breadth of thought.

On a typical Friday night I am

Decompressing at home after work, going out to eat, and possibly harassing friends. You know, all the usual.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I have been known to get head leakage at the end of particularly sad movies.

You should message me if

You type in proper English. Well, we shan't discriminate here; if you can type properly in any language, go right on ahead, we can figure out translation later.

Now for the depressing 'I might not message you back' boilerplate. Isn't that sad? I used to reply to absolutely everyone, if only to be polite. I mean, look, they took the time to say hello, it would be terrible for them to think I thought badly of them for some reason.

Unfortunately, this does two things. It eats up my time, and it may lead some people on. So here's the deal: if I haven't messaged you back, don't despair! I'm sure you're absolutely wonderful. I've just decided that, at this point in time, I feel that I don't have much to speak with you about. I am sure, however, that there is somebody on OKCupid who has all kinds of things to speak with you about, so don't be too discouraged.
