My self-summary
I am kind, sarcastic, generous, and loyal. I will stop in the middle of the road to help a turtle across. I buy a ridiculous amount of girl scout cookies and give them away.

I believe in the Oxford comma.

My Daughter calls me fearless and dreads going to the grocery store with me because I will break into song while we shop.

I'm a thinker and eternal student. I was a scientist. ENTP to the core. I crave knowledge and understanding - what are the attitudes, behaviors, and motivations of people.

I'm a bit of a geek. I like to cook, practice traditional Japanese martial arts, create, fix things, and admire the arts. I'd rather share some wine and have a good conversation than watch sports. Sometimes I ask the bartender at the sports bar to switch the channel to the Food Network. It never happens.

I am spiritual, but not overtly religious. Each person is entitled to their own faith, and no one faith is better than another. We all take a different path up the mountain to enlightenment.

I believe in diversity and equal dignity among people. In compassion and understanding whenever possible.

I love children and animals and feel we can learn much from them about being better people. I have been known to watch funny dog videos and think bulldog puppies might be the cutest thing on Earth.
What I’m doing with my life
I am looking for small moments of happiness. That could be making someone laugh, a smile, or some great conversation.

There is something special about quieter times at home, snuggling on the couch and watching a movie, drinking a glass of wine, reading, or cooking (I can make a mean Vegan chickpea Masala!).

I would like to try ziplining. Go to the Ballet. Dress up in SteamPunk outfits. Maybe the Ballet in Steampunk outfits...

I've started baking bread and expanding my culinary skills. I've cranked out some delicious sourdough loaves.

I want to learn leatherworking.

I want to start watching Downton Abbey but secretly fear I won't be able to keep up with the witty banter.

Moving forward I want to be better this year than I was last year, even if its only a little bit, and even if others don't notice (Dad, Friend, Pet companion, Person, Warden of the Planet)
I’m really good at
Thinking, simplifying, solving problems, and developing strategies. (see that? That's an Oxford comma)

Helping people.

Figuring out the ending to movies and then feeling smug about it.

Drinking whisky in all its forms. Especially Islay malts.

Grilling asparagus so they don't fall through the grill.

My Sensei tells me I have a devastating Osoto Gari.

Keeping the bird and squirrel feeders in the yard filled.

Making squirrels and songbirds fat and happy.

According to my daughter I make a pretty good quesadilla (freshly grated Parmesan is the key!)

Making lists like this one...

Using 'creative license' to justify poor grammar.
The first things people usually notice about me
"Why is that guy talking to me and what's up with the friendliness?"

My familiar, but uncertain Ethnicity

A full, hearty laugh. Maybe the kind you'd expect from Grizzly Adams or a Viking.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Some of my favorite authors are Malcolm Gladwell (Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers) and Jim Butcher (Stormfront, Dresden Files). Gladwell sees connections and insights no one else thinks about and writes about them in an informative, engaging manner. I have long loved the works of Hemingway - The Old Man and the Sea, a classic, was the first book my parents bought me as a small boy in Puerto Rico. Jhumpa Lahiri is a phenomenal storyteller.

Music - The Who, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Tom Petty, Queen, Ska, The Clash, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and many others. I've never been much of a fan of country.

Movies - Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Silver Linings Playbook, Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Rear Window, North By Northwest, Look Who's Coming to Dinner, The Last Samurai, Rashomon, Amelie, City of Lost Children, The Machurian Candidate (original), Lost in Translation, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Cinema Paradiso, Klute, Coen Bros, Luc Besson, Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Miyazaki, Strictly Ballroom, Spencer Tracy, Audrey Hepburn, Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, True Grit (both versions), so many others...

TV - Breaking Bad, Law and Order, 30 Rock, Seinfeld, Louie, Game of Thrones, Dr. Who, Vikings, Sherlock, Jack Taylor, Big Bang, No Reservations, Iron Chef Japan

Food - All of it! Favorites are Sushi, Thai, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Chinese, Puerto Rican, I especially love interesting ethnic cuisines
The six things I could never do without
My two amazing, kind, intelligent kids that will be better people than I could ever be. I love spending time with them when possible.
