My self-summary Propose an edit
I love to explore
the city, meet
new people, and find cheap good eats. I aspire to become
outdoorsy. I am
slowly climbing out of my urban/suburban comfort zone. I was a
theater major in
college (though I want to be a doctor), so I love all kinds of
stories, including
books, movies, music, dance, and plays. I also like to volunteer around the city.
I am a socialist
(in theory), a christian (in practice), and a
pirate (in my
dreams). I like to talk about politics and religion, and thankfully my friends agree that
our conversations are always about the free exchange of ideas, and
never get heated. Although those Pirate vs. Ninja debates tend to
get a bit bloody...
My sarcastic friends think I'm goofy and my silly friends ask
"could you BE any more sarcastic?" Sigh. The world is a complex and
crazy place, and laughter is truly the best medicine and
the universal language! That banana peel gag transcends cultural
barriers. Or, if you believe Eddie Izzard, the phrase "Shaggy and
Scooby" is an international sign of friendship.
I am a liberal Christian and an honorary Jew (I can sing and pray
in Hebrew AND Latin). I wish I could be both. I mean, Jesus and all
his disciples were Jewish! I was a leader in both fellowship groups
in college.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Hi there! I am enjoying my mid-twenties living in Boston! I am always looking to
make new
friends. I love to go out and DO things. Sitting around is
boring when the whole world is right outside! Wanderlust is ingrained in me,
and I am itching to go abroad again. Right now I console myself
with reading a lot of travel writing. I have started
taking Spanish lessons. I figure that it's the second language of
this country, and if I want to be a doctor, it will definitely be a
necessity! I am struggling with not saying in French what I want to
say in Spanish.
I've been taking dance lessons in west coast swing, lindy hop, and
jive for about a month. Dancing with another person is very
different from dancing with an ensemble (ballet, jazz, modern). I
am having a ball at being a beginner again!
I ply my trade as a superhero by day (office manager) trying to
work my way towards grad school in public health. I eventually want
to go to med
school, and then it's off to help save the world from itself!
Dr. Paul
Farmer is one of my role models. Seriously, look him up!
I'm a die-hard Lost
fan. The show is now on hiatus until February 2009, and I am
distraught. I also like Scrubs, House, CSI: Las Vegas, and MythBusters.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Making
people laugh! I enjoy irony, sarcasm, and just plain silliness!
I am a fantastic storyteller, and I really enjoy it.
Understandably, I am addicted to books, movies, etc.
I look up everything and anything on Google, Wikipedia, and imdb.com. I also poke around
Lostpedia from
time to time. Podcasts are my drug of choice.
I really try to figure out why my friends like the things they do,
so I am always willing to try a new activity, food, kind of music,
etc. Ya know... as long as I (probably) won't be arrested for it.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
My warm, outgoing Midwestern friendliness and energy; my large
expressive hazel-grey, green, blue eyes; my sense of humor; the
book that's inevitably in my purse; the fact that half of their
veggie platter has disappeared!
My friends tell me that I am always ready with a smile, and I am
THE person to call if they need cheering up (or an honest opinion)!
I can find a silver lining anywhere. It keeps me sane. I call
myself an optimistic realist.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
As a storyteller, I love books, movies, and music. Favorites always
evolve over time, as we change, don't they?
I am a serious bibliophile! What do you recommend? I'll add it to
my to-read list. I love fiction and plays! I also drop into biographies, science, and history books from time to time. I'd say
about 60% of my books are from the 19th century or earlier. I ADORE
Harry Potter.
Some of my favorite modern books are
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, by
Christopher
Moore (his best work by far); Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman & Terry
Pratchett; The Once
and Future King, by TH White; Eat Pray Love, by Elizabeth
Gilbert; Thursday Next by Jasper Fforde,
and Holy Cow, by
Sarah MacDonald.
I adore the Muppet movies and foreign films, especially
from China, India, Spain, and France. I bonded with my dad over
Indiana
Jones, James
Bond, Star
Trek, and the (original) Star Wars movies. I've seen most
Shakespeare
films (since his work was the focus of my major). Other favorites
include: Stranger than Fiction,
Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Hero, Peter Pan, Angels in America, Dracula (1931), Good Morning
Vietnam, Monty Python, Newsies, Fried Green Tomatoes,
Joy Luck
Club, Tao
of Steve, Some Like It Hot, The Life
Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Rocky Horror Picture
Show, Princess Bride, Annie Hall, Almost Famous, The Usual
Suspects, North By Northwest,
Clerks, Dogma.
I have serious relationships with the music I love. Sting, U2, Phil Vassar, Gin Blossoms, Eddie From Ohio, CCR, Jewel, Lonestar, Jars of Clay, Bobby Darin, Miles Davis, Dido, the Smiths, Beautiful South, Dar
Williams], and Selena]. I love folk, country, and indie rock. Brit Pop makes me laugh, so I love it!
I like most music, but I rarely recognize a top 40 pop song. The
80s and 90s are nostalgic, the 60s and 70s had some great rock and
folk, and the 50s were just plain fun! Before that, it's all about
the blues.

Milk, strawberries,
apples, Jack
Daniel's BBQ sauce, and dark chocolate make everything
better. I try to eat healthier food, though I was raised in the
Midwest, so BBQ will always have a special place in my heart. I
also have a love of good Mexican food from visiting my dad in
Tucson. Boston has so many interesting restaurants, and I love to
try exotic food. I am definitely a city girl, since there is always
something interesting and new to find, try, and explore!
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
My favorite things in life are laughter, dark chocolate, fruit, being active, affection, and stories; ideally, they are enjoyed
all at the same time!
I would have to add Irish tea, sunshine, the color green, my Mac, and spicy food.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
Life, the universe, everything...
My future, the state of the world, God, my friends scattered across
the globe, how fun free association is, what novel I'd like to live
in, what kind of superhero I'd be if I had powers, how much fun a
game of Calvinball on the Boston Common would be!
Convincing myself that I do not NEED an iPhone when people are
starving in Burma, no matter how pretty and shiny and useful they
are! The shops at Copley Place are just infuriating to me. How can
people spend that much on clothing and purses when that money could
go to feed families or provide medical supplies to places with no
infrastructure.... and I am getting off my soap box now. I've got
first-world guilt.
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
At a movie, dance lesson, new (cheap) restaurant, friend's house,
author reading, guest lecture, or pub. Sometimes a few of these in
one night! I am not a fan of clubbing at places where it's all
cheesy electronica and "back that ass up" hip hop (those genres
have so much more to offer); I'd rather go somewhere I can talk to
the people with whom I am spending time! I do like to go out to
louder pubs, though, like the Burren when a good band is playing,
for some fun dancing and a beer or two. There is this one 90s cover
band that makes my night!
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I really enjoy my loving, accepting, LIBERAL Episcopal church! I help coordinate
the high school youth group, and the kids crack me up and impress
me every week! It's a great thing to find a community where you
don't have to conform to fit into the prescribed "acceptable
parameters." Episcopalians are all about discussion, learning, and
thoughtfulness. It's a very collegiate atmosphere. Check out Robin
Williams' list of the Top 10 Reasons to be an Episcopalian.
Hilarious! But when I mention that I go to church, most people
write me off as a Republican Evangelical. That's just not me, but
the stereotype is persistent.
Also, while I have lots of energy and friendliness, I am bashful
when I am interested in someone. Painfully shy, actually. I can be
great friends with someone, laughing, joking, flirting, but the
minute I feel that spark, I clam up and turn beet red. *sigh*
Finally, I am totally envious of Eddie Izzard: the comedic skill,
his career, his fabulous makeup and ability to walk in treacherous
heels!
You should message me if Propose an edit
Message me if you want to hang out and make a new friend! Read any
good books lately? See anything good at Coolidge Corner? Want to
bike along the Charles or take a sailing lesson? Do you know of any
good, cheap international eats? Let me know! :-D
An EMAIL will impress me far more than a random IM of "hi." Tell me
about yourself! What caught your eye? Start a conversation!
Seriously, I will answer all coherent emails, especially since I am
kinda shy about making the first move (see above).
Also: if you know the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow, Tim
wants to know.
Note: If you're offensive, explicit, or looking for a May-December
thing, keep on movin.
