I am amused, principled, and obstinate.

My Self-Summary

Hmmm, well, I am always up for an adventure. My most recent undertaking is a cross-country move from Minnesota to Seattle. So far, so good, but not quite as full of adventure as I might have hoped.

My interests generally revolve around social justice & environmental issues, travel, and internationally related anything.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm working in a non-profit, dealing with housing issues for low-income people. As if that's not enough giving of myself, I am going to start volunteering with refugees and immigrants, which is a population I was working with previously. They are the people with which I really love to work.

I think sometime soon I'd like to teach English abroad. Nepal would probably be my first choice of location.

I’m really good at

I'm really good at teasing people. Also, not proof reading anything I ever write. I like to think I'm good at listening, but lately have come under the suspicion that this probably is untrue. How often do you come across a listener who completely and entirely is engaged in the story you have to tell? Not often, I say.

The first things people usually notice about me

I've been told in several different contexts that I look like Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years. Except, I expect, a bit older.

Also, I have been told that I have "beautiful face like Karen people". (They're a ethnic group from Burma).

Finally, I've been told "you're really easy to be around". I suspect this is because I'm comfortable with the occasional silence in the conversation and am not put off by hard topics.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Persepolis, A Force More Powerful, The Little Prince, The Neverending Story, Life of Pi. My guilty pleasure is retold fairy tales. I love to read in general, though.

Movies: Where the Wild Things Are, The Princess Bride, Good Morning Vietnam, Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day, Finding Neverland, Chocolat, The Darjeeling Limited, Mamma Mia. I was shocked to discover that I actually enjoyed watching the newest Terminator movie. SHOCKED.

Music: The Beatles, Devo (nostalgia. My dad would put it on as a child so my brother & I would dance and wear ourselves out), Norah Jones, Train, Tom Waits, Avett Brothers, Dvorak, Bob Marley, Matisyahu, and probably folk music as a whole. Surprisingly, Atmosphere and Brother Ali, too. Really, though, I much prefer when other people choose music for me.

Food: I am a very adventurous eater. Usually if I'm trying to choose something in a restaurant, for example, I will base my decision on whatever I haven't tried before. This is an exceptional useful tactic for me since I'm notoriously indecisive in these matters.

The six things I could never do without

Friends
Family
Summer (and by this I mean the sun. And I think by this I probably just mean the outdoors as a whole. Fall and winter are wonderful too. As is spring for that matter. Alright. Seasons. No, outdoors. No... nature!)
Basic human rights, we'll say as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A creative outlet. Cooking has been that lately.
A sense of wonder, with which I appreciate all of the above

I spend a lot of time thinking about

My next travel plans, whether it is for a long or short trip. The book I'm currently reading. What I want to do with my weekend. Where I am going to be in a year.

On a typical Friday night I am

Hanging out with friends, whatever the activity might be. Usually, it's something like dinner, hanging out at a chill bar & talking, a movie/play/concert, bonfire/barbecue. Not all at once, of course. Mostly it involves me laughing (or rolling my eyes) at my crazy friends' antics.
