I am a word-nerd by trade and hobby. I've recently moved to the bay and I'm still getting accustomed to the place. I like good food and thoughtful entertainment of any sort, but I am very much not opposed to a good "low" gag or crappy takeout on occasion. I'm from everywhere. I grew up as a military child, so I've lived all over the US and a few places outside. I have one of those made for TV unplaceable accents, unless you ask me how to pronounce "tomato". I blame my mother spending so much time in England before I was born. I speak mediocre Japanese and terrible Mandarin, with smatterings of hideous Portugeuse, Spanish, German and 3 or 4 words of some unplaceable Hemitic language. I love talking about how people think and perceive and act and in what order that tends to occur. I am slowly becoming very zen, and if you're interested in learning how Lao Zi was an ancient Chinese Libertarian, or how the ultimate work on how to be a Samurai (The Hagakure) also contains a good number of hints on how to catch the eye of your desired man, I can tell you.

I am ironic, gormful, and dead-sexy

Being too busy to have updated this terribly recently. I should get on that. I work for a relatively small company that does Natural Language search engine stuff. I'm a "Language Engineer" which means ... well, I haven't worked that out, precisely. What I do, in short, is make the search "go" from a non-technical perspective. I have a degree in linguistics, which means I know what arcane sounding terms like metonymy, anaphora and tmesis mean. Until I acquired my current job I probably would have told you that that was the extent of the benefit of my degree.

Language-fu.

And fixing things until they don't work anymore, then fixing them some more until they work differently than they used to.

正しい言葉を忘れる

I'm not as abrasive physically as I am virtually. Although some people seem to ... enjoy a good dose of ... friction.

In no semblance of order: Tolkien, Rowling, King (Mainly The Dark Tower), Palahniuk, Snicket, Gibson (not read enough there to say this with full honesty, but I have enjoyed what I have read) Murakami (same as Gibson, but anyone who at least recognizes his name seems to think having read anything by him is a mark of good breeding. I don't read as much as I seem to, I think, as everyone seems to consider me more widely read than I feel I am. Perhaps it's just reading too much nameless trivia about writing that's done it.

Fight Club. Better movie than book, all Palahniuk's other books are better. Not that it was bad, just that everything else was better. Memento, everything by Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine) the usual LotR/Matrix/et cetera. Also weird foreign crap like Tom Yum Goong, Ong Bak, Returner, Versus et cetera. Some of that is just the novelty of things in "Not English" and the allure of foreign cultures, but oh well.

Music. I like music, music is good. What do I own lots of? Nine Inch Nails, VNV Nation, Icon of Coil, Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant, Shiina Ringo, Sarah McLachlan (more the mid-later stuff, the first few albums aren't that interesting, but Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing are masterpieces) The Beatles, Stromkern, Combichrist. Noticing a trend? Yes, I am slightly rivet, even if I don't much dress that way now. I still have black BDUs, though. There's just something compelling about 'ze angry german music.

I should get a beret and go snap my fingers while sipping espresso with my clove cigarettes at a slam poetry reading, but I don't much like coffee or cigarettes so I'm a bit out of luck there. Though I didn't choke when I had cloves, so if I ever smoked anything it would be them.

Why a strong majority of my top matches are Bi. I've never been with a woman who's been with fewer women than me. I find that fascinating. (Literally 20 of the top 30 matches when I don't bother to sort by "single", something like 9 of the top 10 if I do. You'd think being a linguist I'd be able to come up with a term like "Fag Hag" referring to a male and bisexual women, but nothing terribly interesting comes to mind, perhaps it is the lack of specific bisexual epithets.)
