My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm either an extrovert with a quiet streak or a quiet streak with an extrovert.

Job-wise, I'm an Assistant Director on movie/ TV/ commercial sets, and I produce and direct my own movies. Working in the movies is less glamorous than you want it to be but more bizarre than I ever expected. When else do you tell the NYPD to please move their cars, because you're putting a mechanical bull in that part of the street?

I once found total happiness on a Siberian subway platform.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm a freelancer: some weeks I work 100 hours, some weeks I don't work any. It's fun, maddening, and exhilarating.

Like so many of us, I love to travel, and this last year has given me some especially wonderful opportunities: Ecuador, Montreal, California, the Catskills, the Bahamas, Austin TX, and Colorado.

Very recently, I started learning French. I'm planning a trip to Morocco next year and I'd like to be able to read the street signs.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
memorizing numbers quickly. I learned to do this in a bet with my 7th grade math teacher.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I look damn good in a hat. Also I get compliments on my eyes, which make me feel lovely. The compliments, not the eyes.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

This says something about me: I want to keep this section short, but part of my brain keeps saying, "But you left out ____!"

So, as briefly as I can put it:

If I weren't into film I'd probably be doing something with classical music. It is my second passion. I love Shostakovich, Mahler, John Adams, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Verdi, among many others.

Pop/ rock/ mainstream favorites are Regina Spektor, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Johnny Cash... Anything with a strong blues influence.

Movies: Brainy movies with heart, silly comedies with a brain, dramas with a sense of humor, action movies with something to say. Edgar Wright, Ingmar Bergman, Martin Scosese, Mike Leigh, Akira Kurosawa, and Kelly Reichardt, among others, come to mind as people that achieve this.

Books: Salman Rushdie, Dostoevsky, David Foster Wallace, EE Cummings, Haruki Murakami, Lydia Davis, WH Auden, Susan Sontag, Etgar Keret. Recently finished 100 Years of Solitude and would love your thoughts on it.

Other things I look at and listen to: The Revolutions Podcast, RadioLab, Futility Closet (it's a blog), Post Secret,, and Dan Savage.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
How about instead, "Six small pleasures in life":
*A rainy day where you don't have to do anything
*People leaving Snapple caps on the ground so you can read the goofy facts on the underside
*The smell of struck matches
*When the subway pulls into the station and happens to stop so that the doors are directly in front of you
*Whiskey. Maybe that's not such a small pleasure.
*When a celebrity or politician has a moment of unguarded, silly candor
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
My next film project, what I'm gonna eat next, and the perils of global warming.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
havin' a drink!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Look, I love my job, but if I ended up as a stay-at-home dad for a while? That sounds kind of awesome.
