My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Tinker. Tailor. Archer. S....too bad I'm not a spy. Smartass, maybe? (See below for explanation).
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Well, trying to build up a steady income base that I can rely on? Right now I'm exploring several avenues based on my rather diverse range of skills, from translation to tailoring.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Being a smartass. I mostly hang around the more intelligent and well-educated sort of people, but even then I think I'm the smartest person in the room about slightly more than half the time. I also seem to have a gift for linking information from widely differing fields of knowledge to come up with unconventional solutions that sound quite simple and obvious in hindsight. Put simply, I'm a younger, shorter, buffer, and better-looking version of Mycroft Holmes.

I'm also quite good at making things with my hands. The most obvious example, perhaps, is in cutting and sewing; I've drafted patterns for and made up several articles of clothing all on my own, from newsboy caps to trousers and capes and coats. For the most part I concentrate on historical and military styles but I've also been drafted into designing stuff and making up patterns for a ready-to-wear urban fantasy clothing line due to be launched later this year (2012). Other than that, I daresay I'm pretty good at woodworking and poking around with ropes (you know Boy Scout stuff).

Last but not least, research -- especially historical research. Lately I've grown particularly interested in early Indonesian military history, with a focus on the assimilation of Western methods and technologies into the local military milieu, and I'm currently trying to learn as many of the relevant languages as possible so that I'll be free to read and collate the primary sources without having to rely on what others say about them.

Oh, and did I mention archery?
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
In the company of strangers, I'm usually the silent guy who sits at the edge of the group and observes everybody else's interaction. When I grow familiar with the group, though, don't be surprised when I start talking a little too much. The temptation to show off my superior knowledge (cue evil overlord laugh) is just too great to resist.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books: Machiavelli's Il Principe, Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and its world in general, Gabriel Garcia Marquez's The General in His Labyrinth, Stephen Crane's A Red Badge of Courage, Umberto Eco's Baudolino, and a lot more. I'm an obsessive bibliophile

Movies: I don't watch them very often--certainly not as often as I'd like to if I weren't so easily distracted by books. Let me think about it. Maybe Hero or The Emperor and the Assassin--the one starring Jet Li as the Nameless Swordsman? Or Hot Fuzz. That's one brilliant police movie. I'm also a long-time fan of Star Wars--well, the original series, anyway.

TV series: Mythbusters, obviously. Wonders of the Solar System, Wonders of the Universe, and just about anything with Brian Cox in it (even a straight man like me can consider him cute). The reimagined Battlestar Galactica. The BBC Sherlock. Sometimes I watch things for sheer entertainment value, too, like Stargate SG-1 (I've been told that I resemble Daniel Jackson somewhat, except that I've never died and been brought back to life naked on an alien planet) and Top Gear. And of course Blackadder.

Music: It's a bit hard to define the parameters, but maybe the most noticeable thing about my music tastes is that it generally doesn't follow current popular trends. Right now the thing I listen to most of the time are Apocalyptica, Scorpions, Fonogenico, Orange Pekoe, and The Corrs as well as a bunch of classical numbers from a rather large number of different composers.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Now, this is hard, since I try my best to have as few things as possible that I can't do without....
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
My plans to take over the world. I have a very long-term outlook, you know.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Sleeping, writing, or fooling around on the Net. Mostly sleeping, since I make a habit of doing a 10K run on Saturdays and it usually helps when I've had enough sleep on the previous night....
The most private thing I’m willing to admit

I'm not that evil. Not just yet.
