My self-summary
Remember how we used to do it? My grandparents met at 16 when his best friend started dating her best friend. My parents met when he was injured on his job and she was the receptionist for the physical therapist he was sent to. My brother met his wife back when he was a paramedic and was called when her great-aunt took a fall. Thank God none of them were relying on internet personals or they probably never would have met each other! What if one of them didn't have good pictures on their profile?! I think I need to get out more... or perhaps get injured in some way.

I moved back here not long ago after 17 years working in L.A. and I’m so glad to be back where I grew up. I'm witty, kind, easy-going and a lot of fun to be with... at least that's what my friends tell me.

I have a small patch of gray hair over the right side of my forehead, kinda the reverse image of what Jay Leno used to have. I get tons of compliments on it... some people even ask if I do it on purpose, but to be honest, I've always been self-conscious of it and have even colored it on a few occasions. Oh well... it's there.

I lead a very laid-back existence. Live on my own, just me and my cat. No children, no drugs, no weirdness, no extreme rock climbing or training for triathlons on weekends, no dungeons with whips or chains, no lingering ex's and no crazy family drama or train wreck friends. That's how I like it. I keep my fridge stocked with drinks and good food so I can enjoy relaxing, watching movies, listening to music, home projects and working on whatever whenever. Simple. I don't need to be in constant movement or travel to far-off lands for my life to be fulfilling.

I love baseball and am a "true-orange", third-generation Giants fan. I have a goal of seeing as many different ballparks as I can and am planning a multi-city ballpark tour next summer. I enjoy live music in small places, barbecued hamburgers and love trying new restaurants. Why are there no good delis up here?! I'm no gourmet cook but I can make just about anything I want... or at least give it an honest shot.

I'd like to use my camping gear again. Vegas is always a fun getaway and I'm comped anytime at the Las Vegas Hilton or whatever they're calling it these days. I've always had a thing for staying in hotels. I think it's because they make the bed for me. If I had to choose between an all-inclusive beach resort or backpacking through Europe, hands down I'm heading to the beach.

I'm a major night owl. I'm always up too late for my own good though my favorite part of the day is crawling into my comfy bed at the end of it. If the knowledge is trivial and useless I probably know it but am definitely capable of having an intelligent conversation. I have a lot of good friends in L.A. and I try to get down there often.
What I’m doing with my life
One of my life's ambitions is to watch every movie on AFI’s Top 100 of All Time list. I still have a ways to go.

I've already had my dream job so I’m thinking on what to do next, though I will never give up getting back to it someday. A volunteer job I was doing recently turned into a real part-time paying position so that’s keeping me out of trouble for now. I own my own home and have myself pretty well set up for the future.

Here are some things I am NOT doing with my life --

*Planning my next exciting trip to Columbia and Madagascar.

*Considering living in Nepal for an indefinite amount of time.

*Backpacking through Indonesia.

*Swimming the waters off the Greek islands.

*Jumping on a plane to Tanzania at a moment's notice.

*Rappelling down the Great Wall of China, kayaking the Panama Canal or any of the other myriad adventures so many people on here have planned or have done, including everything I listed above.
I’m really good at
I'm a great listener. I think I give pretty good advice and care a lot about the people in my life. I'm the one who always remembers birthdays and anniversaries. If you happen to casually mention a candy bar you really like, you can bet the next time you come by I'll have one for you. I like doing that kinda thing.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I don't know why there's so much animosity towards this section. This one's my favorite! This is where you really see what you have in common.

Books... I always have a book going (Thanks, Mom!). Mostly biographies and non-fiction. I love reading about history, especially early American. I buy more books than I can read. I just finished a book about how the JFK administration might have played out had he not been assassinated and decided I needed something lighter next, so I picked up Cary Elwes' account of the making of The Princess Bride movie and now I'm reading an old book I found on the history of San Mateo County. I'm also halfway through Stephen King's Revival on my tablet and The Astronaut Wives Club on my IPOD. Yeah, I'm all over the place. I subscribe to way too many magazines and am a lifelong newspaper subscriber. Yup, I still get the Chronicle delivered every day -- the actual paper newspaper.

Movies... The original Star Wars movies, Godfathers I & II, most of the John Hughes movies, Shawshank, Almost Famous, 40 year-old Virgin, Kill Bill, Apollo 13, The Natural, Major League, No Country For Old Men, Fools Rush In, A Bronx Tale, so many others. I have a warm spot in my heart for old silent films. There's a cool little silent movie theater in Fremont I'd love to take you to.

Shows... I love documentaries and news specials, Deadliest Catch, Big Bang Theory, Childrens Hospital (funniest 15 minutes on TV), Blue Bloods, Louie (best half hour on TV), Survivor and anything about Hoarding (it makes me want to clean out a drawer immediately). I still miss West Wing, ER and NYPD Blue. New faves include Ray Donovan, The Grinder and You're the Worst. I really like the show Episodes on Showtime -- it's the most accurate depiction I've ever seen of how TV really works behind the scenes.

Music... 80's New Wave is still my favorite. Can never get enough Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Stones and Stan Ridgway. Jackshit is my favorite live small band (It's Elvis Costello's band playing Rockabilly in character - they're awesome! They only perform at one small club in L.A. and I go down to see them every time they play), David Bowie, Steely Dan, Chicago, Chili Peppers, the real Van Halen and of course -- Springsteen! Saw him three times on the previous tour and have my ticket for Oakland coming up! I wish I could follow him on the road like people used to follow The Dead.

Food... I'm up for pretty much anything except seafood and sushi. (That's not a typo -- I don't like sushi) Give me a cheeseburger and fries (or onion rings) anytime and I'm a happy boy. I dug bacon before it was cool. I love comfort food (I do a great brisket and meatloaf -- sorry, vegans), Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Round Table Pizza! I'm always on the lookout for a good BBQ joint. Pesto makes just about anything better. Breakfast is typically my favorite meal of the day and I traditionally cook myself a nice big breakfast on Sunday mornings. How do you like your eggs?
I spend a lot of time thinking about
...whatever happened to cooking something at home together or ordering a pizza, popping in a DVD and simply enjoying each other's company for an evening? There's so much to be said for just hanging out. Sure, I love to travel and go places, but not all the time! So many people on here seem to feel that if they stop moving for five minutes they’re going to dry up and die. much I miss being half of a couple. How much I miss the fun of dating someone -- looking forward to phone calls, a text hello, making plans together. It's been too long. so many people on here can afford to live in San Francisco when we keep hearing it's one of the most expensive places in the country to live. Seriously, how do you do it??

*see more movies
*start swimming again
*spend less time online
*more water, less soda
*bring some good new people into my life
*read more books
*home repairs I've been putting off
*finally quit OKC!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
None of these are really all that private... just random stuff to admit... Feel free to comment.

I find women who have no tattoos at all to be fascinating. These days there's more of a story behind why you don't have any as opposed to what "that one" means.

I worked in television production when I lived in L.A. and put together a pretty decent IMDB page. I have lots of good stories if you're interested in that kinda thing.

***A bit of an editorial comment here... seriously, if you're one of those "I'm too evolved to watch TV"-types that seem to have taken over around here, I am SO not your guy. For the record, "I don't own a television" is a bit dated as a smug humblebrag. First of all, there are some amazingly smart well-made programs on these days as there always have been. Second, watching television shows on Netflix counts as watching television -- I'm not sure how so many people convinced themselves otherwise. Third and most important, not owning a TV doesn't amount to much if you can't go two minutes without checking your phone (which is, in my opinion, a far more contemptible modern vice).

Many people on here seem to be very preoccupied with Burning Man. To be perfectly honest, I don't intend on EVER going to Burning Man. I would rather sit through an all-day tax seminar than go to Burning Man. I loved the article I read about how Burning Man was conceived to get all the hipsters out of town so the rest of us could enjoy the quiet for a few days.

I don't get up early on Saturday morning to bike ride to the farmers' market for fresh produce. More accurately I drive over to Safeway on Saturday afternoon to pick up some lettuce.

This two-minute video sums up precisely why I hate smart phones --

Here's another good one...

In my spare time I don't rock-climb/bungee-jump/sky-dive/hang-glide/zip-line/base-jump/moon-walk/pole-vault/X-Game or Tough Mud. I just don't believe people do all the things they SAY they do on here. Are we really out discovering new hiking trails every weekend? Really?!
You should message me if
The fact that I own a TV doesn't scare or repulse you.

You keep a clean car, fridge and bathroom. Want to instantly learn about someone you're dating? Check out the inside of their car, fridge and bathroom. If you're not initially horrified then they might be a keeper.

You live close by. You have a warm smile. You own a car. You're a Giants fan and will go to games with me. When you tell someone "I'll call you later" you actually DO IT!! Reliability is huge with me. You think the most important part of a relationship is being together and being there for each other, not what you do or where you go. You don’t bash anyone’s politics in your profile. Your days of using "party" as a verb are behind you and you're looking for something a little more grown-up. You like holding hands at a movie. You like holding hands anytime!

Thanks for reading this far... If you did, treat yourself to a cookie.
