I am scattered, curious, and empathetic.

My Self-Summary

I grew up in Berkeley, with a brief side-trek to boarding school in West Virginia. I just moved to New York at the end of August, and I'm starting graduate school in sociology at NYU; I lived almost 25 years in one town, so the entire process makes me feel like a child in a candy shop.

What I’m doing with my life

For the last few years, I worked with children of various ages: tutoring math, coaching track, working at an after-school program.

Now I study sociology at NYU. The subject matter is more complicated, but I'm not sure if the people are all that different.

I’m really good at

Explaining complex ideas in simple terms. Seeing both sides of a disagreement, even when the other side is wrong.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm always asked where I'm from, because I apparently have an accent. Except I don't have any particular accent; I just talk quickly and mumble.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

books (fiction): Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, The Sandman, The Quiet American, Catch-22, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honorable Schoolboy, Smiley's People, A Wizard of Earthsea, The Farthest Shore, The Dispossessed, The Crying of Lot 49, The Sirens of Titan, Slaughterhouse Five, A Universal History of Inequity

books (nonfiction): Late Victorian Holocausts, The Wretched of the Earth, The Great Transformation

movies: 2046, Charlotte's Web, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Blade Runner, Annie Hall, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Lives of Others, The Science of Sleep, Sunshine, Waltz with Bashir

music: The Beatles, David Bowie, Broken Social Scene, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, The Killers, K'naan, Lupe Fiasco, Modest Mouse, Sigur Ros, The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Tom Waits

food: I love waffles, and eggs benedict. The latter causes problems, because I don't eat pork.

The six things I could never do without

A good book, a clean bed, hot coffee, some good friends, a challenge, and a sense of purpose.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Educational theory/practice, nature v. nurture, the origins of sexual difference, political-economics, ideology and social control, my role in terms of all of these.

On a typical Friday night I am

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

The hardest job I ever had was instructing algebra to inner-city 13-year-olds in Richmond, CA. I had 20 kids over five periods each day, and I spent the majority of the time filling the holes left by 8 years of educational neglect.

It was frustrating and exhilarating and occasionally I look at what I'm doing now and wonder if anything I do now matters as much as when I was with those kids. Sometimes I miss them terribly; but sometimes I don't think of them at all.

You should message me if

If you're beautiful, charming, brilliant, and you really believe we'd have something to talk about.
