My Notes edit

My self-summary

I am eclectic to say the least: used to be a rare crossover between newspaper writing/editing and advertising/marketing, but currently working for an international bank and doing my bit to "help keep Portland weird." I grew up in an FBI, then State Department family and have lived on four continents. Politically I'm considerably left of center, and one of my reasons for leaving SD was that I was tired of feeling like the lone blue dot in a Very Red State. I now am middle-aged, but never quite left behind my hippified youth (yep, commune and ashram in New Mexico, the complete enchilada!). Spiritually, I'm a "recovering Catholic," and I have gradually evolved into a shamanic Pagan with Celtic and Teutonic leanings. I am adventurous and I adore discovering new things and ideas, and exploring new places (and new kinds of food, too). My M.O. was best described by Helen Keller when she said: "Life is either a daring adventure... or nothing!"

What I'm doing with my life

I have recently moved to Beaverton, OR to be closer to my (adult) daughter. It's a big change from the Black Hills but I am loving it. So much to do, never enough time to check out all the things that fascinate me. It's wonderful to be close to Momma Ocean again, and oh the seafood... after being landlocked for so many years I am reveling in it. The dottir and I get together for sushi once or twice a month, such decadence! There is terrific music everywhere, good theatre , lots of great Pagan folk, and lush forests and flowering plants in every direction. Oh Ma Ma Ma, I am happy to be here!

I'm really good at

Reading, writing, editing, spelling, grammar, teaching, wool-gathering, white-water hot tubbing, punditry and double entendres, and slow swimming (I love just about anything that involves hanging out in or around large or small bodies of water). I'm not bad at cooking, back rubs or scratches, grocery shopping or stalking the wild (or Farmer's Market domesticated) asparagus. However, I am not particularly fond of shopping as a hobby / pastime, or other contact sports.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

My smile. Strangers have been known to stop me on the street and fall into it.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Oy! My favorite books are currently crammed into four large bookcases at home, with overflow in the storage unit, and you want me to start WHERE??? If I must name names, I'll have to name authors, cause listing the books would take way too long. Start with: Tom Robbins, Diana Paxson, Kurt Vonnegut, Marian Zimmer Bradley, Spider Robinson, Toni Morrison, Robert Heinlein, Barbara Kingsolver, Alice Walker, Orson Scott Card, Janice Farrar, Dion Fortune, and Scott Cunningham, all of whom are right up there.

Movies, well I guess I can narrow those down to anything with Humphrey Bogart and/or Kate Hepburn, anything by Mel Brooks, The Wicker Man (1973 version, not the 2007 abomination), What the Bleep do We Know?, Dr Zhivago, The Piano, Rocky Horror, The Princess Bride, Little Big Man, Camille Claudel, Rob Roy, What Dreams May Come, Brigadoon, 1776, Witches of Eastwick, Practical Magic, Rude Awakening, Cabaret, Lawrence of Arabia, The Emerald Forest, the original Indiana Jones movies, Close Encounters, and Altered States. And the never-to-be-forgotten Koyaanisqatsi.

Music: I like classic rock, blues and bluegrass, alt.country and roots music, as well as some of the new Pagan and "faerie" music. Tried and true faves are groups like Jethro Tull, Queen, Eagles, the Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Police, U2, Meat Loaf, Janis, Billy Joel, Jefferson Airplane, also love CCR, CSNY, The Band, Gram Parsons, Emilou Harris, Peter Gabriel, and the REALLY old stuff like Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Chad Mitchell Trio, and Firesign Theatre (not exactly music, but classic just the same). More recently I'm discovering Todd Snider (perhaps best known for his hysterically funny song, "Conservative Christian Right Wing Republican Straight White American Males"), Omnia (a Pagan group from the Netherlands), and Gogol Bordello.

The six things I could never do without

daughter, friends, books, music, ocean, mountains, a familiar cat (I never said I could count)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

global climate change, political climate change, thealogy and theology, entheogens, natural law, death and altered states of consciousness, indigenous cultures, and "conservative christian right-wing republican straight white American males."

On a typical Friday night I am

trying to decide between cleaning out my email and going to a movie.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

Among my extended family and friends, my 1946 Websters Unabridged Dictionary is affectionately known as "Big Dic," and my Websters Collegiate is "Lil Dic."

You should message me if

...you're Pagan, Heathen, or Pagan/Heathen friendly; interested in shamanism or indigenous spirituality; or want company for sushi or a movie.
