My Notes edit

My self-summary

***Update*** This really isn't where I'm putting my energies right now. I'm pretty unlikely to respond if you email me.

I love people, challenges, words and music. I'm a reformed former English major, which means that I love books again.

I am self employed as a writer-musician, music producer and arts educator, but (to quote Mike Doughty) sometimes I want to "run away and join the office". I'm a passionate traveler, aspiring polyglot, lover of books and voracious news junkie. I know that American rules say that the period is supposed to be inside the quotation marks, but I've yet to be convinced.

I tend toward the independent and the social, and am drawn to strong, charismatic, smart, sensual women.

I throw the best damn Halloween party you'll ever go to.

What I'm doing with my life

Ok, honestly? Clearly I'm spending too much time on the intrnetz. I make a lot of music. I spend a lot of time teaching kids and recording music. I spend a lot of time thinking about going back to Brazil and scheming for that to happen, as well as considering graduate school (gasp!). I've loved my work for years, but am feeling that it is time for some new challenges and stimulation.

I'm really good at

Talking trash. Even if I'm no good at the contest in question. I haven't gone golfing since I was 12, with my uncle, but guaranteed that if I went golfing with some friends, I'd talk smack all the way to an 18 hole trouncing. Pretty good at good natured heckling also.

I'm also good at winning bets, because I really only bet when I'm sure of the answer. Consider yourself warned. If you say "wanna bet" and I say "yes", back slooowly away, make no sudden moves and do not bet. Unless you're trying to get me drunk and we've bet a round on it. That'd be sneaky. But, really, you don't have to get me drunk to take advantage of me. I already like you...

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Well, as far as the way I look, my curly hair, that I'm tall and my eyes. Once we're actually talking, people probably notice that I'm intense, verbal and paying attention.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Oh, boy. While I know we aren't defined by our books, movies, music and food preferences, they're some major things to love about life! I can't help but want to put a huge list of things here.
Books: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay reminded me as an adult why I started to love books when I was a kid. Brilliant doesn't have to be dry.
I loved Bel Canto and think The Grapes Of Wrath is amazing. In general, I'd go for a Pulitzer winner over Booker (and either over the sometimes inscrutable Nobel winners), though if you're a girl who thinks I'm wrong about that, and wants to tell me why, we'll get along great.

Music: I love songwriters like Dylan, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and bands like the Talking Heads, The Decemberists, Radiohead and The Old 97's. My current faves are Andrew Bird and Firewater. I also listen to a lot of Brazilian Samba and Bossa, and a smattering of jazz.

I'm less passionate about film, but I thought Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was very good, Yes and Il Postino both were powerful. I must have seen Star Wars a hundred times as a kid, as well as The Muppet Movie, which I still quote because I'm a dork like that.

Sushi. Thai food.

The six things I could never do without

This kind of question brings out my inner overly literal adolescent:
oxygen. water. you get the idea.
I've certainly got more stuff than I need, but there really aren't any things I couldn't do without. Glasses/contacts sure make my life a lot easier than it would be otherwise. Beyond that, good conversation, complex food and friends, loving family... adolescent to greeting card in a few lines. aah well.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Politics, and not just because it is an election year. Music, sex, my friends family and relationships in general. Traveling, changing careers or otherwise making a Big Change.

On a typical Friday night I am

I oscillate. When I'm feeling rowdy, extroverted and social, my ideal Friday is at a party at someone's house, where I know some but not all of the people there. I'm pretty likely to be at a local music show, either because someone I know is in the band, because I'm a big fan or because I'm on the stage.

Most frequently I'm out with a few friends at a bar.

Last night I stayed home, made some dinner, cracked a bottle of cheap but not terrible wine and just relaxed a little. The truth is I try and keep "typical" as more of an acquaintance rather than a close friend. Also, I have a pretty unusual schedule, so Fridays aren't usually the same pressure release for me that they are for people with more M-F schedules.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I've got little to hide and even less shame. Ask and I'll probably tell you.
