My self-summary
Hi there! I'm new here, and looking to make some friends. I'm a creative, funny Irish musician who has just moved to San Francisco. I travel a lot, and also live in Indiana and Ireland. I'm studying anthropology and ethnomusicology in the Bay Area. My hobbies and interests include playing music (Irish, Breton, and Chinese traditional music and folk music, along with classical and some jazz on Irish flute, concertina, uilleann pipes, bombarde, and gu zheng, hiking, vegetarian cooking, British comedy, Irish studies, Irish Gaelic, linguistics, PC and Mac gaming, dogs and cats (to play with and take care of, not to eat), environmental issues, folk art, cartooning, web design, hanging out at bookstores and coffeeshops, sociology, medieval studies, comparative religions, theatre, historical re-enacting, genealogy, independent films, philosophy, set dancing and meeting new people.

I am spontaneous, unconventional, and humorous
What I’m doing with my life
Right now, I am pursuing a degree in anthropology/ethnomusicology and Celtic studies. When I'm not studying, I play Irish traditional music with a few groups (www.myspace.com/autumngaylrhodes for more info) and teach Irish flute, concertina, tin whistle, and uilleann pipes. In my free time, I like to go hiking, kayaking, watch foreign movies, garden, go antiquing, explore the area, and travel.
I’m really good at
Listening, playing music, cooking, helping people. Not good at: writing these things.
The first things people usually notice about me
my warped sense of humor, my clothing (I'm a hippie), my hair, and my nose :P
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: O'Neill's Music of Ireland, Last Night's Fun, 'Round Ireland with a Fridge, Letters from a Nut, Lord of the Rings Movies: A Mighty Wind, Spinal Tap, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Best of Show, Waiting for Guffman Music: bohola, Lunasa, Flook, Altan, Danu, Dervish, early Solas, Slide, teada, Sliabh Notes, Bothy Band, Planxty, Cian, Patrick Street, Ceide, and Deanta. Other musicians: Kate Rusby, Paddy Keenan, Deirdre Havlin, Liam O'Flynn, Catherine McEvoy, June McCormick, Kevin Burke, Tommy Peoples, Mick O'Brien, Brian McNamara, June McCormick & Michael Rooney, Tim Britton, Marcus O Murchu, Sean ac'Dhonncha, Aine Meenaghan, Kevin Henry, Cathal McConnell, early Dolores Keane, Emer Mayock, John McKenna, John Williams, Josie McDermott, and many more. Food: Thai, Burmese, Japanese, Persian, Indian, just about anything except for burgers and fries
The six things I could never do without
My flute, my laptop, my friends, cheese, my family, and my dog Ceili.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
our insignificance in the universe, our possible significance to the survival of the planet, where I will eat my next meal, cheesecake, donkeys, Monty Python, Sri Ramakrishna, world music, and Latvian obscenities. More later.
On a typical Friday night I am
Playing a gig with bandmates or listening to an Irish or folk concert, going to a play, visiting a new restaurant, watching a new independent film, playing music, or wandering around town. Just to let you know, while I'm not a prude when it comes to drinking, I don't go out drinking myself for a variety of reasons. First off, alcohol doesn't react well with my medication. Secondly, while I usually enjoy watching drunk people act silly from afar, I really dislike it when they're trying to cop a feel or do something stupid, and I hope to avoid ever doing that myself. :P
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a morbid phobia of writing. Yes, yes, yes, you smartarses, if I'm so phobic, why did I finish this profile? Well, it took about two years to get this far and I'm unlikely to do any more of it because I hate writing so much.
I’m looking for
  • Everybody
  • Ages 20–36
  • Near me
  • For new friends
You should message me if
you like pie, you like world music, you're easy-going, you'd like to have somebody to hang out with, you know the answer to #36 on the calculus exam, you have free cheese samples, you want to exchange ideas on how to make alpacas the mainstay of the American economy.
