My Notes edit

My self-summary

I don't talk to strangers, please introduce yourself. ;P

Honestly I am more than happy to answer almost any question people have for me. Of course I can't promise you will like my answers depending on the question and your personal point of view. I am highly opinionated in some areas and others I could care less about.

If you think you are interested in me - read my whole profile & read at least some of my journal entries. If after that you are STILL interested send me an email. (I am much more likely to respond to a real letter even in email format than a woo or an IM) I admit that the "R u free 2 IM me" stuff is NOT a way to win my favor.

I try to answer every email I get, however I have a life away from the computer and sometimes it takes a while, it is nothing personal! On the same lines sometimes my mailbox is rather full when I check it, and if I like an email I may be sending it on to one of my other email accounts. Which takes time. (This started as a habit from when I did not have an updated email box but I found I like the way I can organize my email else where.)

Yes, I admit I am a digital packrat. ;-) I am also a geek and proud of it. Geeks are sexy!

What I'm doing with my life

Living and enjoying it.

I'm really good at

O ' I have one or two talents. :P Some of the few things that I have been praised as being good at are; Cooking & making food look pretty- (Ask me about my 12th night dinner for 104 people, complete with gilded marzipan fish and roast goose with lemon sauce)

Writing the words to praise the accomplishments of others, Being a "mother hen" to friends and family and yes sometimes even to strangers, and taking long walks.

Even though online friends have begged I have resisted the temptation to post those lovely photos.

There are just a few other things but you will have to find some of it out for yourself

;-P .

EDITORS

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Physically - My glasses & hair. I have had complete strangers walk up to me to complement me on both. The glasses because they are artsy, and the hair for being long and curly.

Personality wise- Friends are telling me - Loyal, Caring, Honest.

Oh and if you get to know this woman you will find that beyond the lovely braid is a smile ever as compelling as the Mona Lisa's if only Leonardo Da Vinci would have had the good sense to go to Ireland where people really know how to smile.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I have very eclectic tastes in all of the above. Perhaps it is easiest to say is it something that is well crafted? Made by someone with talent or skill? Was thought put into the making of said item? Then chances are that I am at least willing to consider it.

Books - Yes, please! On almost any topic or genre. A list of some of my favorite books and authors is to be forthcoming. Sigh... I just blogged about my love of reading and how it drives me nuts when people do not have an interest in books.

(1/17/08) I guess I am going to have to find the time soon to write my list of favorites. The problem is there are So ooo many! People already comment on my extensive movie and music lists. Just wait until they see my book list. I should warn people there is not a room in my house that is free of books! :) Perhaps while I am proctoring mid terms this coming week.

Music- This write up is incomplete but will at least give you some feel for my varied listening habits. I enjoy several forms of music including but not limited to

1) Celtic
2) Folk
3) Blues
4) Bluegrass
5) World beat
6) Classical
7) Rock
8) some Jazz
9) some Metal
10) some Country
11) some Gothic
12) various forms of ethnic music like Mongolian throat singing
13) even opera from time to time
14) O yes, I like musicals and Zydeco music

If it is truly musical I will listen. For that matter I will listen to almost anything that does not denigrate women or promote violence. Because I feel it is important to understand where my students are coming from I even listen from time to time to stuff I don’t enjoy much. Most rap (not all) falls in this grouping as it often does both of the previously mentioned. Life is too short to put up with those things I do not believe in.

First some of the more unknown ones- If you know any of these folk/ Celtic / bluegrass/ or other performers/ groups ... We really do share something in common. Armor & Sturevant (I really love their song “You dance like you drive”! It has a wonderful rhythm and beat to it, the lyrics make me laugh and I just feel good when I hear it.) Old Blind Dogs (who are from Scotland but play here in the states from time to time and I highly recommend! They do Celtic music with bongos, which I would not have thought would work as well as it does. Their sound indescribable in the very best meaning of the word, Whiskey Bards (Who I managed to talk into coming into camp during our open house party and they then played for us. * I got major kudos for that one!) The Dady Brothers (I went to Ireland with John and Joe and they are just wonderful guys as well as being amazingly talented!) Trout Fishing in America, Small Potatoes– Yes, I really am a small potato head. Lol, Turku, Mannheim Steamroller, Back Tuva Future, and along the same lines but Not Mongolian is Huun Huur Tu

More Well known performers / music

1) Rusted Root
2) Silly Wizard
3) Loreena McKennit
4) Warren Zevon
5) Bruce Cockburn
6) Creedence Clearwater Revival
7) Running with scissors ( Thanks to my friend Warren who lives in WA and introduced me to their stuff)
8) Kansas
9) Melissa Ethridge
10) Natasha Bedingfield
11) Nickelback
12) Santana
13) Bruce Springsteen
14) Stevie Wonder
15) Genesis (The early stuff)
16) Chicago
17) Foreigner
18) Aerosmith
19) David Bowie
20) Eurythmics
21) Everclear
22) Cher (Her early stuff not so much the techno pop)
23) Stone Temple Pilots (I really like “Where the River Goes”)
24) Stone Cold (Thru the Glass is my favorite of their music)
25) Concrete Blonde- (With Blood Letting being my favorite of their albums)
26) Counting Crows (“a Mona Lisa” – go figure)
27) Flogging Molly
28) Gypsy Kings
29) Ray Charles
30) Billy Holiday (She was just amazing!)
31) Frank Sinatra
32) Keith Urban
33) Andre’s Segovia
34) Weird AL
35) Flogging Molly
36) Ballad of Serenity- from the movie Firefly
37) The sound track to Don Juan Demarco
38) The sound track to Braveheart
39) The music from 42nd street
40) The music from Chicago (The musical this time instead of the group).

This is by no means all of it but will at least give you some idea- If you listen to something you think I would like ask me about it, if I have listened to it I will tell you if I like it and/or the performer(s), if I have not listened to the music you are suggesting chances are I will check it out and then get back to you on what I think.

Movies - This write up like the music is incomplete but will at least give you some feel for my viewing habits. Please note that almost anything that is not a slasher film (The Freddy films and Friday the 13th films fit this genre and are not my cup of tea.) will at least be considered. I am not that fond of scatologcal humor so some sophomoric films leave me flat but beyond those two issues I am willing to at least try and sit through almost anything. I do have a real fondness for the following styles of film - in no order of preference:

1) over the top vampire and or werewolf films- I know that since I don't like slasher films this may not make sense to some of you but I like the mythos behind the vampire and werewolf films and some of the over the top stuff I just end up MST3ing,
2) All in all I like most science fiction and fantasy
3) well written drama
4) well drawn animation
5) historical fiction and/or well researched documentaries
6) comedy that shows some thought and or humor based on life’s truisms
7) suspense films can be great- Hitchcock is wonderful!
8) and oh- yes I watch films with subtitles! I don't ask that you watch them but know that some of my favorites are subtitled.

With that being said here are some titles and even for some - reasons why-

1) Anything with
a. Bing Crosby
b. Danny Kay
c. Humprey Bogart
d. Spencer Tracy
e. Carey Grant
f. Jimmy Stewart; especially:
i. It's A Wonderful Life
ii. White Christmas (watch them both every year!)
2) I adore both
a. African Queen [Which also has the advantage of having Kathrine Hepburn in it & she is amazing! :)]
b. Singing in The Rain.
3) The Shawshank Redemption ( Morgan Freeman, just rocks! )
4) Monty Python and the Holy Grail - I love silly!
5) Rear Window
6) Nightmare Before Christmas
7) Spirited Away
8) Fifth Element
9) Firefly
10) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy– despite the fact that they cut out some of my favorite parts of the books (Tom Bombidill (sp?) being one of the parts they whole sale cut from the story line.)
11) Princess Bride
12) Pirates of the Caribbean (I did not care for the second one which was a disappointment on my birthday *pout* last year and as of yet have not seen the third)
13) Shakespeare in Love,
14) Boondock Saints
15) King of Masks (a wonderful subtitled film from China)
16) China Cry (the true life story of a woman who now lives in here in the U.S.A having left China to seek religious and political asylum.)
17) and Das Boot (Yes, another subtitled film.)

Foods – Food is a passion of mine, so much so that I almost became a professional chef-Back in high school I interviewed and had been accepted to go to school at the C.I.A. (Culinary Institute of America) However, I realized just before the end of my senior year that I did not want to cook for a living because for a number of reasons it would take all the joy out of what I loved.

1) Spicy is good
2) ethnic is wonderful!
3) Sushi is yummy
4) Veggies, all kinds (Yes, even the ones most people think of as weird, like artichokes, asparagus and brussel sprouts) the only exception is okra, which I dislike due to the texture (I am not fond of slimy- ironically, contrary to what most people may think, I do not generally find sushi/sashimi slimy).
5) Edible flowers are fun
6) Chocolate is the food of the gods!

I no longer eat things that are made with wheat *Sigh...* as I have discovered that I am allergic to gluten. (Gluten is a protein found in: wheat, rye, barley, and other foods derived from these grains. It is also is responsible for the wonderful elasticity of kneaded dough which I miss!)

The six things I could never do without

Besides the practical answers of- good health, air, water, food and shelter from the elements? Family and friends! While I don't like being without some things & I fully admit to having some hedonistic tendencies (big fluffy pillows, high quality chocolate, hot showers- etc,,,) everything else can be replaced or gone without.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The number 42, which is of course the meaning to life the universe and everything. Honestly, my family, friends and my students. My house and what I am going to do with it next. Menus & cooking techniques. Odd bits here and there on almost anything and everything. Mostly in this order.

On a typical Friday night I am

>With friends or family. > Staying up far later than I should.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I believe this question fits the meaning of an oxymoron. Right up there with jumbo shrimp and driveways. ;P

You should message me if

If you have more than two brain cells to rub together to make a spark.

If you believe (in):
1) Honesty
2) Humor
3) trying new things
4) being a life long learner
5) hugs
6) blowing bubbles
7) good food & good wine
8) Long walks
9) Family and friends are worth more than you can place a price
10) random acts of kindness
11) working hard vs. hardly working
12) playing as hard as you work
13) dancing until dawn
14) candle light and soft music are always a good thing
15) Shakespeare is meant to be seen
16) All sports are more interesting if you are actively playing them
17) miniature golf is fun
18) science fiction speaks volumes about our society's political beliefs
19) Travel is important in understanding the world around us
20) women can and should be allowed to do just about anything that a man can
21) that women should also earn the same pay
22) brains and a good heart are more important than looks
23) that there is a joy that comes from reading and owning a book that computers should not replace
24) That Chantilly Lace and a pretty face sound appealing
25) chivalry is not dead
26) that chivalry and women's rights do not have to be mutually exclusive
27) picnics can and should be held year round

If you do believe in these things or can at least humor this highly opinionated woman, you might be who and what I am looking for. If you have read this far there is hope, after all hope springs eternal.

Unfortunately one of my goals has not been reached yet. I have, not as of yet, met the right gentleman. I will be happy to be pen pals or activity partners with those who are looking for such as another goal is to keep meeting new people and trying new things. If you believe, clap three times, oops, that's for Tinker Bell :). Perhaps an IM or a short note? Then a soda and some fries or a game of miniature golf?
