What I’m doing with my life

I recently moved to Milwaukee and started my graduate program in art therapy. I hope to eventually work with children and adolescents seeking alternative counseling.

I work part-time doing before and after-school care for elementary aged kids. I color a lot. I impress with my mad four-square skills. I distribute tasty snacks. It's a sweet gig.

I spent the gap year between undergrad and my grad program working as a Hall Director for Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. I do miss it there, but I am really jacked to be in a larger city.

I'm a graduate from Lawrence University with majors in Art History and English. I also minored in studio art with an emphasis in painting.

I’m really good at

(being super nice)
(understanding kids)
(appreciating art)
(working hard in the aims of some sort of creative expression)
(being too passionate about everything)
(making people laugh)
(cooking and baking)
(being empathetic)

The first things people usually notice about me

my passion, my kindness, my glasses, my compassion, my smile, my tattoos and piercings.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: 100 Years of Solitude, A Clockwork Orange, The Age of Innocence, A Sand County Almanac, As I Lay Dying, The Awakening,The Bell Jar, Bob Dylan's Chronicles, Cash, Civil Disobedience, East of Eden, If on a winter's night a traveler, The Great Gatsby, Into the Wild, The Invisible Man, Jane Eyre, The Lorax, Notes from the Underground, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Walden, Wuthering Heights, Of Mice and Men, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Republic, The Rover.

My favorite authors include the Brontes, Dostoevsky, Emerson, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, Thoreau, and Wharton.

I also like the comics- I usually read them daily. My favorite is Get Fuzzy.

Movies: A Streetcar Named Desire, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, Benny and Joon, The Big Lebowski, Boondock Saints, Bottlerocket, Children of Men, Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, Corpse Bride, The Crow, Darjeeling Limited, Edward Scissorhands, The Elephant Man, Empire Records, Eraserhead, The Fountain, Gummo, Harold and Maude, I <3 Huckabees, Life is Beautiful, The Machinist, Mulholland Dr., One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, On the Waterfront, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Royal Tenenbaums The Short Films of David Lynch, Tristan and Isolde, Walk the Line, 21 Grams.

I just really dig Wes Anderson, Harmony Korine, David Lynch, Quinten Tarantino, and Darren Aronofsky films.

I also like educational documentaries, particularly when they are watched on a Saturday night while drinking.

Music is a bit more difficult for me. I live a hybrid life of indie, folk, bluegrass, metal and alternative. My passion for music began with metal, but I haven't been listening to that as much for the past two or so years. I am much more into more earth-driven sounds.

Metal(ish)/Grunge/Rock: 1956, Alice Cooper, Amon Amarth, A Perfect Circle, Becoming the Archetype, The Black Dahlia Murder, Celtic Frost, Coal Chamber, Dark Funeral, Death from Above 1979, Deceased, Demonhunter, Devil Driver, Dog Fashion Disco, Ed Gein, In Extremo, My Dying Bride, Nile, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Nothingface, Old Opeth, Rage Against the Machine, The Sepultura, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Unearth, Venom...

The Essential Unclassifiables: Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Tom Petty, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, Coltrane, Keith Cooper, Heinvanker, The Mars Volta, Hot Chip, Mahavishnu Orchestra

Indie/Alternative: The Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, Beck, Tracy Chapman, Cake, The Decemberists, Ani DiFranco, Iron and Wine, Neutral Milk Hotel, Damien Rice, Radiohead, Silverchair, M. Ward, Dar Williams, The Smashing Pumpkins, Teitur, Muse, Iron and Wine

Bluegrass/Newgrass: Railroad Earth, Trampled by Turtles, Yonder Mountain String Band, Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Gillian Welch, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Free Range Pickin', Monroe Crossing...

Food: I eat pretty much anything- as long as it falls within the vegan frame. I love to cook! I really like Thai, Italian, Mexican, Indian, and Chinese. Hummus, dolma, and pan-fried tofu are some of my favorite things in the world.

Television: I don't watch TV often, but when I do, I have a few favorite shows- GhostHunters, Antiques Roadshow, History Detectives, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office (UK and American), and Unsolved Mysteries.

The six things I could never do without

1. My family and friends 2. Earth 3. Art 4. Learning 5. Music 6. Books

***life***

On a typical Friday night I am

hanging out watching movies, out at the bars for a drink or two, trying to catch up on my endless pile of work or just relaxing.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I have an overabundance of:
-empathy
-passion
-kindness
-optimism
-introversion
-impatience

I have a desire for:
-patience
-deep relationships
-meaningful conversation
-pickles
-compassionate and independent people

Facts that could assist in your winning a trivia contest on my life:
=I'm not a fan of winter, but I also see the need for it personally. Without it, I would never be able to appreciate my favorite seasons (anything but winter) more.

=it is impossible to fit me into any sort of mold, category, or classification

=I used to be in a metal band when I was in high school. Yep. I know, right?

=I tend to hang out with people older than me. I feel that I act/think/behave beyond my age.

=I can't relate to superficial people. At all. I just don't think it's a concept my mind grasps.

=I'm very, very impressed with people whom are not only willing to talk intellectually with me, but whom are also willing to challenge me in my thoughts.

=I was in a sorority in college. I actually served as president of said sorority.

=I really dig guys (or anyone for that matter) that can keep up with me. I'm extremely active mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially, so I need someone to either:
a. pace me
b. join me
(preferably b. That sounds like a lot more fun!)

=My intellectual and career advancement are really important to me. I'm independent, so, when in a relationship, I need my own time to just hang out solo or with friends. I expect the same out of my potential partner.

You should message me if

you would like to have an intellectual conversation or discussion. I really enjoy guys that can actually have some sort of intelligent discourse with me.
