2. stepping outside of my biases / myopias / preferences (we all have them) to try to see the world as others do -- the idea being to learn something I didn't know before.
3. kicking myself into gear when I get too self-absorbed (which doesn't happen very often, thanks to #2).
I think all of the above are absolutely central for keeping ones head and finding real reasons to be happy in what often seems to be a confusing and unhappy world. Humanity - as individuals and as collections thereof - has created some amazing and beautiful systems / objects / ideas, and though we're not there yet, we've truly made great progress in understanding the world we live in as well as making it better for everyone (human and non-human). So, I guess another thing i'm good at is really believing in us -- all of us and each of us.
Movies: 2001: A Space Odyssey (easily the best film ever created imho), Donnie Darko, The Devil's Backbone, The Tree Of Life, The Fountainhead (yes, _that_ one, and I don't at all understand why she is so polarizing), Fantasia, Nightmare Before Christmas, 21 Grams, Primer, Upstream Color
Books and authors: Carl Sagan / The Demon-Haunted World, Naked Economics, Arthur C. Clarke, Thich Nhat Hanh, The Girls Of Atomic City, Yasunari Kawabata, Flatland, Neil Gaiman, David Sedaris, Warren Ellis, Preacher, Sandman, Ursula K. LeGuin, lots of others.
Podcasts: Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Skeptics Guide to the Universe, Rationally Speaking, Planet Money, Point Of Inquiry, This American Life, Skeptoid, Stuff to Blow Your Mind, The Moth, EconTalk (most peeps find econ boring, and that's ok, though I find it fascinating), Big Picture Science.
Food: I'm vegetarian, though not at all militant about it. Meaning, if you ask, i'll tell you my reasons for being one, but I don't proselytize it much and don't demand that everyone i'm around also be one. I love Thai, Indian and other veggie food with a bit of a kick especially, though.
2. expression -- art, writing, ideas, splashes of color
3. my Steinberger and Variax guitars, Virus & Motif synths, Mac and Logic Pro -- yes, i'm bundling all of these into one, for they form a union which allows me to create music
4. the beauty of the female voice (the music I create features it prominently, it has always moved me)
5. the union formed by my head and heart
I think a lot about music, math, economics (mostly developmental), ethics, photons, respecting others without disrespecting myself (read: how we can get along and see the value in one another without dismissing the value in ourselves), how I can be a better person, what _is_ a person, where I want to travel to next, why I love the spicy Hella Vegan burrito so much (but I do, I do), the often _very_ out-of-the-box thinking of the geniuses whose shoulders we stand on that resulted in the things we take for granted every day, and a lot of other things.
I'm not what people would normally call "spiritual", but I do think a lot about what lives inside us (often called "baggage", though that term seems to over-consider its weight and under-consider its utility), and how this informs how we approach / treat others.
Also, noodling (or developing if past the noodling stage) on guitar or synth, or -- lately, anyway -- practicing Spanish with friends in cafes around SF.
