My self-summary
At work we keep an "overheard" funny quotes list. I'm on it with "this code is like a Russian weightlifter: a bit hairy, but it gets the job done".

Besides timely one-liners I'm known for my best-in-the-world elephant noise impersonation, which delights kids and adults of a certain mental age. Trust me: it's good. I have a feeling that if I were stranded in Africa with no supplies and no friends but a nearby herd of elephants, I could probably live as one of their tribe.

The family is back in North Carolina including a Mom and a Dad, four dachshunds, a brother, a sister, a giant klutzy dog that belongs to my sister, a little nephew who should be walking any day now, an aunt, two cousins, and my dad's mustache (which is older than I am). I miss it sometimes - they don't make skies anywhere else like they do in Carolina. And for all the quirkiness of the residents, my family home is a warm and loving place.

Like nobody else in the bay area, I write software for a living. I moved here to found my own startup and now I work at someone else's. In my spare time I'm a mentor for young founders with a certain fellowship/incubator program. They inspire me with their optimism and in exchange I try to guide their efforts away from obvious disasters.

This year I learned how to dive in Bali over some beautiful coral reefs and ship wreck ecosystems. I flew out to Southeast Asia to teach a one-week web development course at a Singapore university and took advantage of my location to visit the nearby tropical paradise.

But while I make time for fun and grand adventures, ultimately I believe that life has a serious purpose. I want to have a family someday. I believe in a duty to leave the world a better place than I found it and I'll fulfill that through the legacy I leave in work and family life. I know these dating profiles tend to keep it light and fun, but when I look back on my life, I value the times I helped a friend in need more than the vacations I took or the craft beers I tasted.

I'm terrible at shutting up (ENTJ). I'm always learning about things that catch my interest and I'm going to talk your ear off about them. If you date me, you're going to learn about genetic engineering, the fall of the Roman republic, the protestant reformation, bitcoin, and whatever else currently catches my fancy.

I'm attracted to an intelligent, feminine woman that can both hold a conversation and look good in a dress. I value positive people who treat others well. Wisdom may be the most undervalued trait in the dating world.

To keep fit I train Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Sometimes I run the dish, climb rocks, or surf (badly).
What I’m doing with my life
I'm working at an internet startup whose mission is to provide access to a world-class education to everybody. In my spare time, I seek out beautiful sights, inspiration, and good company.
I’m really good at
- I wrote lyrics a parody of Katy Perry's "Birthday" for a music video we made at work and I think it came well.
- I can read fast and do arithmetic in my head
- I once won an essay contest on a topic in economics
- I think I finally learned how to learn athletic activities. I'm picking up Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu and it's fun to see myself get better.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I make a great roadtrip playlist, but I ran into trouble the last time I drove to Tahoe - my playlist was only 6 hours long but we had to drive a 9 hour round trip. You can't repeat songs on a roadtrip! I've since added to it in a quest to make the best roadtrip playlist of all time that will never repeat or run out.

I read lots of books - sci fi, nonfiction, classics, philosophical and religious works, poetry, and sometimes contemporary tech writers

Music has always been close to my heart. I enjoy pop concerts for the spectacle and classical music for the depth of feeling. Somewhere in-between are musicals.
The six things I could never do without
Like Seneca, Epictetus, or Marcus Aurelius, I pride myself on resilience and being able to do without things
On a typical Friday night I am
I love board games and dinner parties. If there's a movie out that looks decent, sometimes I'll round up some coworkers and head over after our Friday company happy hour.

I'd rather go to a tame party with friends and a fire pit than a rager full of strangers.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My middle finger on my right hand has a slight disfiguration that my sister made fun of during 16 years of growing up together - even though I, of course, was a perfect brother to her and never teased her or made fun of her, not even when she had that string of unflattering high school yearbook photos, I swear!

Even though I don't belong to any religion, I often attend church services or other spiritual ceremonies. I admire how religion brings people together of all ages in community, and how it provides a thread uniting modern people with their ancestors and descendants. Sometimes there is even good advice in the service. It's a private thing to admit around here, where most of my peers are atheists. I identify with the main character from "The Life of Pi", whose fascination with many different religions confused and frustrated his parents ("You have to pick one, Pi!")
