My self-summary
Have you seen Firefly? It's one of those sci fi TV shows about a spaceship crew where each member represents a different cultural archetype. There's the uptight doctor, the rustic mechanic, the renegade captain, and etc. I most resemble the wisecracking pilot, Wash. When the engine is on fire, the ship is plummeting out of the sky, and all the alarms are going off at once, Wash will crack a joke to defuse the tension.

That's me - quick with the one liner. At work we keep a "funny quotes" list from conversations we overhear at the office, and I'm on the list with "This code is like a Russian weightlifter: a bit hairy, but it gets the job done"

Oh yeah, like nobody else in the bay area, I write software for a living.

The family is back in North Carolina, including a Mom and a Dad, four dachshunds, a brother, a sister, a giant klutzy dog that belongs to my sister, a little nephew who should be walking any day now, an aunt, and two cousins. I miss it sometimes - they don't make skies anywhere else like they do in Carolina. When I visit I enjoy taking a break from the fast-paced life of Silicon Valley. My family home, for all the quirkiness of the residents, is a warm and loving place.

I'm terrible at shutting up (ENTJ). I'm always learning about things that catch my interest and I'm going to talk your ear off about them. If you date me, you're going to learn about genetic engineering, the fall of the Roman republic, the protestant reformation, bitcoin, and whatever else currently catches my fancy.

Despite my interest in future technology and working in the tech industry, I also have an old-fashioned/traditional streak. I love learning about history and thinking about where we came from. I like to have kind, positive, and empathetic people in my life. Life doesn't always go your way, so I value resilience and wisdom.

My ideal date involves getting outdoors or cooking dinner together. You can learn a about a person from the way they handle a kitchen knife

To keep fit, I train jiu jitsu and climb rocks. Sometimes I run the dish.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm working at an internet startup whose mission is to give everybody access to a world class education. In my spare time, I have various side projects, usually involving writing or coding, and I often drive up to SF to keep in touch with my more hip SF friends.
I’m really good at
- writing parodies of popular songs
- throwing together a meal at the last minute that actually tastes kindof good
- arithmetic
- finding the nearest coffee shop
The first things people usually notice about me
You tell me! I'm giving you an easy ice breaker :)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I make a great road trip playlist

I love coffee

I am good at putting bacon into things. I eat mostly meat and veggies. It makes you lean and strong

I read lots o' books.
The six things I could never do without
Like Seneca, Epictetus, or Marcus Aurelius, I pride myself on resilience and being able to do without things
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Whether or not I'll ever be able to play and sing "Wonderwall" at the same time.
On a typical Friday night I am
I hella love board games and dinner parties. If there's a movie out that looks decent, sometimes I'll round up some coworkers and head over after our Friday company happy hour.

I'd rather go to a tame party with friends and a fire pit than a rager full of strangers.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My middle finger on my right hand has a slight disfiguration that my sister made fun of during 16 years of growing up together - even though I, of course, was a perfect brother to her and never teased her or made fun of her, not even when she had that string of unflattering high school yearbook photos, I swear!
