I am nerdy, neurotic, and wary of bullshit.

My Self-Summary

(I've been told this section is too negative, so have excised some choice parts. Damn you, Rags.)

I used to call myself a writer, but like Harlan Ellison said, "You can call yourself a writer when you get paid for it." So now I merely write.

I love good coffee, good wine, and good food, but good conversation is even better.

I have a two-year degree and will get a four-year...eventually. At UNR.

I drive fast. A bad habit...or the best habit ever?

I don't drink very often, but when I do I can become a snob. The liquor I like is expensive. I have an Ardbeg Uigeadail almost empty and I don't want to drink the rest of it.

(UPDATE: The Uigeadail has been drunk. If you love single malt scotch like I do, please drop me a line)

I enjoy meeting new people, discussing things with them, and finding out what makes them tick.

Also, I can have a conversation with someone composed entirely of Simpsons quotes. Yes, I am that much of a nerd.

What I’m doing with my life

Reading. Writing. Filmmaking when I can spare the time and money (ah, my two deliriously frustrating passions). Hanging with friends and having fun.

Also, school...kind of. Stupid journalism.

I’m really good at

I read fast. Occasionally, I even understand it.

I love absorbing tons of information at once. If you want to just ramble about some random topic, be my guest, as I would adore absorbing every word.

(Incidentally, this is the reason I don't like watching sports most of the time; the yield is too low, the range of potential new information too narrow)

I llllloooooovvvveeee discussing philosophy, religion, politics and culture. What's more, I enjoy being proven wrong, as it means I get to learn something new.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm tall. I use words like "cormorant" and "brummagem," in fact, finding a use for obscure/archaic/funny-sounding words in everyday conversation is fun to me (next on the list: "tumescent" and "brobdignagian").

I shaved my head for the summer.

I have an opinion about almost everything.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

a). My favorite novel is The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner, and Faulkner is my favorite writer. A close second is Raymond Chandler, particularly Lady in the Lake. I'm also wild for Jim Thompson, Graham Greene, Flannery O'Connor, P.G. Wodehouse and John Fante. My love for speculative fiction (sci-fi and fantasy) is growing, though I've always had a soft spot for Heinlein, Dick and Moorcock. I'm always looking for new writers to experience and welcome suggestions.

I love comic books. Anything by written Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman or Alan Moore, such as The Invisibles, Sandman or Promethea is GOLD. Daniel Clowes panders to hipster subculture a bit too much, but I still enjoy him, and Fun Home by Alison Bechdel was great.

As far as nonfiction goes, I love philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, neurology and economics. Murray Rothbard, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ferdinand Saussure, Antonio Damasio and Claude Levi-Strauss are my intellectual role models.
b). A Clockwork Orange
Taxi Driver
Double Indemnity
The Maltese Falcon
2001: A Space Odyssey
Raging Bull
North By Northwest
Citizen Kane
La Dolce Vita
Grave of the Fireflies

Some of my favorite recent films: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Children of Men, V For Vendetta
c). The Clash, Antonin Dvorak, Johnny Cash...music I like doesn't follow any particular pattern
d). Lord, it's more a question of what I don't like. I like Thai, Indian and Italian food the most. I hate macaroni and cheese for some reason.

The six things I could never do without

My laptop, my video games, my books, my friends, my family and my car...though not necessarily in that order. *whistles innocently*

I spend a lot of time thinking about

I like to think about more esoteric things, like if suicide is immoral, would it still be immoral if you were bitten by a zombie and wanted to spare your loved ones the danger of your inevitable transformation to walking, biting, ambulatory meat and teeth? These are the thoughts that keep me awake at night.

They are also the thoughts that kept me out of the really good schools. (Yes, I just ripped off George Carlin, but I don't think he minds.)

Politically I'm heavily libertarian. To fully explain what I think about religion and spirituality would require a couple hours' time and about 10-12 beers. Suffice it to say that I think all of OKcupid's choices for "Religion" are right to an extent, and wrong to an extent.

On a typical Friday night I am

Usually at the cinema, or curled up with a good book and some good coffee or wine.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I shot a man in Reno once. He didn't die, though I was never invited to a briss again.

I have a fascination with the Occult, and chaos magic. I'm also an admitted smark.

I want to bear Grant Morrison's children.

Trust me, no matter how much of a geek I appear to be on this profile, it's but a thimbulful in the ocean compared to the reality.

You should message me if

You share in the geekitude.

(I janked the term "geekitude" from my friend Danielle, hah!)

Basically, if you've got wit, verve, and something on your mind, give me a holler.
