My self-summary
I was once walking in Central Park with my brother and a pigeon flew straight at my head. I shrieked, flailed, and spazzed out (a reasonable response I believe) while my brother pointed and laughed (also reasonable). When I recounted this story to a date, he was terrified that my brother laughed instead of being helpful and compassionate. We didn’t go out again. Being able to laugh at each other when something ridiculous happens is mandatory.

Random things I like:
The beach, quirkiness, honesty (even when it hurts), first kisses, hysterical laughter, night swimming, outdoor eating, movie marathons during thunder storms, tkts, 24 hour diners, being the big spoon, spontaneous dance parties, infomercials, musicals, making lists (obviously), making plans, buffets, board game night, bags of frozen fruit, long aimless walks around the city, watching the Giants play on Sundays, and long runs (I ran the NYC marathon in 2011 and didn't die)

I'm an ISFJ/INFJ/INTJ - apparently I have multiple personalities
What I’m doing with my life
I am a social worker on a psychiatric mobile crisis team. It's like Ghostbusters except the "something strange" is your neighbor/friend/family member having a psychotic episode. OK, it's nothing like that, but it would be pretty cool if it were.

I enjoy clinical work but I'm also really interested in the politics, philosophy and ethics of the mental health system (validity of diagnosis, efficacy of treatment, role of environment, interplay of racism, sexism, and oppression with mental processes and development, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah).
I’m really good at
Listening, dancing (if Michael Jackson comes on, watch out), making people laugh, building camp fires (log cabin method), Tetris, writing and editing, responding to texts as soon as I get them, finding the good in people and situations, procrastinating (and convincing others to procrastinate with me), rationalizing (like why it's OK to call out sick and go to the beach), awkward goodbyes; and stretching (I'm freakishly flexible).

I'm really bad at (it only seems fair):
Walking in the right direction when I get out of the subway, Angry Birds, staying awake at late-night movies, going to bed on time, remembering names, sometimes remembering faces too, small talk, dressing like a grownup, and knowing who directed, wrote or produced something.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm pretty funny (I was voted "most humorous" in my senior yearbook)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
MOVIES: Flirting with Disaster, I Heart Huckabees, and Three Kings, Eternal Sunshine and Adaptation, Singin' in the Rain (and anything else with Gene Kelly), Clue, Anchorman, High Fidelity, Dancer in the Dark, Hannah and her Sisters, Cradle will Rock, Doctor Horrible's Song Along, Field of Dreams, All the President's Men, Roger and Me, Fame, The Princess Bride, Angels in America, Best in Show, The Royal Tenenbaums. Also, Troop Beverly Hills ... there, I said it.

MUSIC: Van Morrison, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Al Green, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, Simon and Garfunkel, REM’s Automatic for the People, I’m also a sucker for disco and 80s pop for dancing purposes (perhaps this should go in the “most private things” section)

TV: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Curb your Enthusiasm, Downton Abby, Sherlock, Good Eats, Lost, Girls, So You Think You Can Dance, Doctor Who, Six Feet Under, Sports Night, Up with Chris Hayes. Also 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Community, Modern Family, Daily Show & Colbert, Arrested Development, Louie (like everybody else).

To watch list: The Wire, Mad Men, Party Down, Freaks and Geeks (been meaning to do this one for a while)

BOOKS: Best things I read this year were the Harry Potter series and The Hunger Games trilogy. If you have any young adult recommendations, let me know. Other books I like - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Native Son, Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius, An Unquiet Mind, Autobiography of Assata Shakur, Life on the Outside, Ways of Seeing, The Quiet Room, A People's History of the United States, A People's History of Sports (I'm a big fan of anything told from the people's perspective)

FOOD: I love to eat, but keep my diet is pretty healthy - nothing processed, no sugar, yada yada. I could eat sweet potatoes every day.
The six things I could never do without
Coffee or tea ... you know, without a little caffeine I'm pretty dysfunctional. It's probably the one thing that I could really, actually never do without. I'm sure it's in my mind, but it feels like my skull is collapsing in on my brain. I could put the requisite answers of friends and family, but what good are they when my head implodes? So, let's leave it with a caffeine source. And spell check.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I spend a lot of time thinking about the politics of mental health (see above); relationships and interpersonal dynamics; war and poverty; how racism, sexism, homophobia, etc affect individuals, families, communities and society; social justice and socialism ... yeah, all that takes up a lot of mental energy, even though it takes up minimal space on this profile.

But also, what is "short-term dating"? Is it a relationship that doesn't work out and winds up being only short-term? If so, why would you want a relationship to not work out? If it's intended to mean non-monogamous and casual, then the distinction between short-term and long-term doesn't work. I think OKCupid should change the options to "long-term relationship" and "casual dating".
On a typical Friday night I am
Hanging out with friends, maybe a movie, board games, dinner and drinks, museum, ping pong, tv and delivery. Who I'm with has always been more important than what I'm doing. When you're with the right people waiting in line for tickets can be just as much fun as the show (well, almost).
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
- I don't know how to ride a bike
- I'm really afraid of birds
- When I was little I wanted to be Amish
- That was before I wanted to be a jockey
- I think Weird Al's In 3D is a great album
- I don't have a spleen
- This is my favorite section
- I'm willing to admit anything.
I’m looking for
  • Guys who like girls
  • Ages 25–38
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
... you can make me laugh so hard I cry, fall down, or need my inhaler; you are open minded and progressive, genuine and honest, passionate and playful, and if you're not too cool to nerd/geek/dork-out about the things you're into.

Or if you would like to watch The Wire with me. I hear it's good.
