My Notes edit

My self-summary

Cocky, smart, determined, sarcastic, passionate, flirtatious, romantic, funny and frequently silly... Older than I look, feel, act and think, but way too young to start worrying about any of that nonsense! I'm a firm believer in mind-body holism; exercise, diet, philosophy, perpetual education... it all keeps me going!

I seem to laugh more than most people I know, and simultaneously take things more seriously than most people. This doesn't strike me as a contradiction in the least.

No matter what it says down there, I'm not "more Republican." I'm actually a laissez faire libertarian (note the very deliberate lower-case "l"). Perhaps the OKCupid scale is not only wholly inadequate in its two-dimensionality, but also skewed a bit toward the Democrat side of things. I do notice that the women I match highest with turn out as "Democrat" or even "Socialist"(!!!) on tests. I have no idea why that is, particularly if I'm "more Republican."

What I'm doing with my life

I'm in a PhD program in philosophy, focusing on epistemology and the early modern philosophers (you know, Descartes and Locke through Hume, with a side of Bacon). Right now I'm calling myself a neo-empiricist, though that's quite likely to change over the next few years.

I am finding the grad school experience challenging but entirely worthwhile. Still, don't take it personally if I don't get back to you right away - I'm a busy guy.

I'm really good at

I'm pretty damn good at arguing my case. I'm good at finding the absurd side of things, and usually can't help laughing at it. I can write pretty well, as well. I'm told I don't lack brains. I seem to be a tolerable cook, and I do my best when I'm making it up as I go along. I give a pretty damn good massage! I'm told that I'm a really good listener, that is until I get bored, and then I'm insufferable. Friends occasionally call me to ask what particular words mean, which either reflects well on me, badly on them, or both. I'm very, very good at admitting when I'm wrong.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

It's either my irreverence or sense of humor, depending on the mood I'm in right then.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(A) In fiction: I tend toward humorous fantasy, but I'm very open minded. In non-fiction: philosophy and history, with very broad interests in both. (B) I tend to like action-adventure films. I loved "Serenity," "V for Vendetta," and "Casino Royale." Regardless, I love movies and would be happy to talk with you about them for hours. (C) Rock & Roll and Classical! Again, this is something I could go on and on about. "Life without music would be a mistake." I'm most often listening to music and quite frequently singing along. (D) I love exotic, particularly spicy, food! I never met an oriental cuisine that didn't offer me a wealth of delicious options. Italian and Mexican are great too, if they're not too heavy on the dairy. I like to cook. Surprise me!

The six things I could never do without

Music, passion, contrary opinions, good food, laughter, calcium, and resistance to arbitrary standards.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Lately, what it might say about me that the love of my life so far is a gay woman. Also, music, epistemology, the development of philosophy, kung fu, chess, food.

On a typical Friday night I am

I haven't established a typical anything in G'ville yet. What did you have in mind?

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I'm generally willing to admit or talk about just about anything. If you're curious, ask.

You should message me if

You're a passionate, fun, uninhibited, non-superstitious woman interested in seeing what might develop, and not be afraid of letting it grow into whatever it becomes. Note: by my standards, being religious or (most definitions of) spiritual means being superstitious.

You're a funny, intelligent, rational, philosophically-minded person looking for good conversation.

Please DON'T contact me if one of the six things that you can't live without is "God," or if you have some variant of "Nothing" in the "most private thing I'm willing to admit here" spot.
