My self-summary
Thanks for stopping by. In order to introduce myself, let me tell you about a book I recently read for my book club. The book’s called _Who Are You People_, and the author went around to various conventions and activities trying to understand people who have passions. The book was fascinating, because I didn’t realize having passions was weird.

I’ve always had intense passions, whether it was translating classical Greek texts in college, giving talks on the discovery of the planet Neptune, studying people’s memories for my PhD, or taking daily nerd walks as I listen to another lecture on history, literature, or, lately, on the Industrial Revolution and history of China. Who’s up for the Ringling Museum for their Chinese art exhibition?

I’ve also followed many passions in my personal life. I spent six years following trails all over Alabama until I finished two hiking books, and since I’ve moved to Florida in the past year, I have almost finished three books. I’ve hiked and camped from Little Talbot Island in the north to the Everglades and Key West in the south, and swam with manatees and in coral reefs.

For fun, I once took a bartending course, and my friends know that I have not one but two signature drinks: Beerjuice and chrosmos. I cook a lot, and one of my favorite things to do is to pick a new recipe, get the ingredients, and spend the evening making a new meal. When that fails, I have many that I could almost make from memory so that my taste buds aren’t ever really bored. Right now, it’s just sad that only my cat Katta gets to enjoy them. (Well, not the drinks, he’s not much of a drinker, and I am more a social and special event drinker these days.) For dinners, I prefer fire pits and stars to restaurants.

You know that guy you see dancing at a concert when no one else will? That’s me. I saw Emerson Hart recently, and after I told him I loved his song “Hurricane”, he made me hum along with him as a duet. I can hum only marginally better than I can sing, which is not that well. It’s a shame because I love music. I’ve studied enough that I know I prefer concerti to symphonies, and Tchaikovsky to Mozart. I once spent months collecting all the number one songs on the Hot 100 since 1958 to present as a way to study the history of pop music.

I value knowledge above all else. I have an insatiable curiosity and genuinely love to learn. In addition to everything else, I started a popular-science bookclub a few years ago and have enjoyed meeting new people at our monthly meetings. I like to bounce ideas off people and get their perspective; I’m rarely without a notepad. If these things excite you, if you like to learn, and follow up “I wonder” with finding out, we might be a good match.

I usually go on one or two hikes a month and go camping several times a year, and would like to share the outdoors with someone. I've traveled all over the south hiking and camping, and currently I am re-exploring the trails and time period of William Bartram who traveled the southeast in the 1770s. I know, that sounds boring, but you’d have to ask the many friends I’ve roped into joining me whether they’ve enjoyed themselves and the “date night” dishes I’ve cooked in exchange for their couches. Who wants to join me in Charleston, Savanna, and New Orleans for the next leg of these adventures? If all goes well, I’ll finish Bartram next fall with a trip to Philadelphia.

In short, I would like to meet someone who has a playful and passionate curiosity about life, learning, love, the world, and is looking for someone to share and discuss those things with. I am looking for a woman who is witty, intelligent, active, passionate, and more than a little quirky. If you think this might be you, email me and let’s talk. If not, good luck with your search.
What I’m doing with my life
I am a professor at a university, and working on a few articles and books. I spend a lot of my time writing.
I’m really good at
Making random goals for myself and checking off lists. For example, I get these hiking goals and I really love checking off hikes I've done (e.g., finished a hiking book on hikes around Alabama and Florida since I have moved here), or I have learning goals and love checking off courses I've done or books I've read.
The first things people usually notice about me
Probably eyes and eyelashes. Ever since I was a kid, people have commented on them. They are an ocean blue and my eyelashes are pretty long and they look like I curl them (but I don't).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I love everything about the book/movie _Into the Wild_: I loved the book, the movie, the soundtrack. I really like the movie _About a Boy_ (and watch it every Christmas). I read a lot, but mostly non-fiction or classic fiction. Lately, I've been stuck on a "women in bad relationships" series of books (e.g., Anna Karenina, Main Street, Madame Bovary, Scarlet Letter). I joke that I must be doing penance. I also watch a lot of documentaries, and my friends insist that I mention I usually watch them with a pencil and notepad.
The six things I could never do without
iPod and iPhone
Fresh air, especially inhaled when emerging from a tent
Cats/Dogs and other furry pets
A good beer
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Honestly, I think a lot about ethics and our place in the cosmos.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either cooking a new meal, mixing up drinks and sitting on a deck with a firepit, or out with my friends. I really prefer to cook a meal at home rather than go out; I enjoy the whole process of getting a new recipe, getting ingredients, and at the end of the night having something that I made--especially when I am cooking with someone else. Anyone can buy a meal, I love trying to make one.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Until a few years ago, I thought the sheep and the goat were the same animal, and that there was an animal named "ham" where ham came from. Yeah, somehow I missed that memo.
You should message me if
You dance at shows and love getting outside for hiking and camping and you love exploring. It's a big world.
