My Notes edit

My self-summary

Several years back I transferred to the University of Pittsburgh from Oklahoma State University to find that Pennsylvania is quite a bit more like Oklahoma than I expected. I love traveling around and seeing new places and trying new things. I studied Japanese and Computer Science, and have only sort of put them to use. I am a practicing Buddhist, which in my case means a functional atheist. I am interested in possibly becoming a teacher, but my main passion in study is in creating video games. They have been my lifelong interest and the push behind my interest in computers and programming and Japanese. Thanks Nintendo! My dream is to elevate video games to viable art status, exploiting the potential for emotional impact and the interconnectedness of life.

I've been starting to DJ recently, and also working on video editing and visualizations for DJ shows. Spinning psytrance is some of the most fun, but I also like dubstep, drum n bass, breaks, and even some bass heavy house.
OkCupid: Now in Japanese!
Konnichiwa. Nihongo wo benkyou suru no wa, zutto jikan ga kakarimashita. Demo, mada renshuu shite ganbatte imasu!

What I'm doing with my life

Listening to music, DJing, programming, and homebrewing beer. It's tough to say what a bigger passion of mine is at the moment, making and playing music, or making and drinking beer :)

I started work at a homebrew supply store several months back, and I'm loving it, if for nothing else because of the 25% discount on all my beer and wine making supplies!

And also going on psychonautic explorations from time to time.

I'm really good at

Learning new things, programming, speaking Japanese, seeing and accepting various points of view, and learning how to do things for myself.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Probably my hair, these days. It's longer than it's ever been in my life; pretty much halfway down my back now, when pulled straight. I'm not sure if the length of my hair is the first thing people notice, or the absurd curliness. But it's fun making girls jealous, either way.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) Richard Dawkins' books and lectures (and recently Neil deGrasse Tyson's stuff), Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Heart of Darkness, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion (play), the Death Gate cycle, the Art of Expressing the Human Body (and anything else written by Bruce Lee), Hagakure, Haruki Murakami's works (mostly his short stories, where he really shines)

(b) The Big Lebowski, Grandma's Boy, Idiocracy, Ghost Dog - The Way of the Samurai, Fight Club, all of Bruce Lee's movies (the best probably being Way of the Dragon and Enter the Dragon, and the unreleased version of the Game of Death), How High, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 12 Monkeys, Donnie Darko, Mishima, the Lone Wolf and Cub series, Zatoichi, Ghost in the Shell (and the sequel), 2001 - A Space Odyssey, and about a few hundred more. I love movies.

(c) I've been a huge fan of Radiohead since OK Computer, but I went back and got into The Bends quite a bit (Palo Alto leaves a bit to be desired, but it was the beginning of their major career). Pink Floyd was my all-time favorite band for quite a while ("all-time" doesn't really seem to last all that long, eh?). I was on a pretty big hip-hop kick recently, listening to a lot of Wu-Tang Clan, MF Doom, Atmosphere, etc. Other favorites include the Flaming Lips, Nick Drake, Tom Waits, Tori Amos, Tool, Prodigy, Daft Punk, Bad Religion, NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and plenty more. And then there's all the crazy electronic music I've got in my collection, which is too long to list the songs/artists I like. But I'll just throw out Electrypnose and Shpongle for now. Oh, and Quantic, too, I guess.

(d) Real mexican food, which is hard to find up here in the northeast, I love Thai and to a slightly lesser degree Chinese food, and I love hard to find Japanese food besides sushi (although I also like sushi) like okonomiyaki and takoyaki or real sukiyaki and yakisoba and yakiudon. oh and donburi (oyakodon at the top of that list) oh so delicious. Although these foods are actually finally starting to show up in America, much to my culinary delight!

The six things I could never do without

Some (constant) source of new and unexplored (to me, at least) knowledge... that basically sums up most of what I would list.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How I can transcend the limits of this material plane of cohabitation and unlock the secrets of the ethereal expanses of the infinit-- oh, uh, I mean... reading books. Yes, reading books....

On a typical Friday night I am

Probably listening to music, either at home with friends or out seeing some DJ at a party or club. And probably somewhat under the influence of a variety of feelings and situations.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I'm pretty sure that whatever I list here on this public space is no longer the "most private" anything.

But the least public thing I am willing to admit here is that I love curling up twist-ties and slowly pulling them apart to simulate sound waves.

You should message me if

You wanna chill, or maybe listen to some beats. Perhaps you know of great shows in da 'burgh that I am missing out on! Or perhaps you need to know of awesome shows that I am planning on hitting up..
